Florida-bred Mystic Lake Adds Fifth Stakes Victory This Year With Sugar Swirl Score

C2 Racing LLC and Stefania Farms LLC’s Mystic Lake tracked frontrunning Launch until the top of the stretch then drew off in the lane to win the $133,000 Sugar Swirl by three-quarters of a length at Gulfstream Park Saturday. In winning the six-furlong contest against four other fillies and mares, Mystic Lake won for the fifth time this year—all in stakes—in nine starts while taking down a $6,000 Florida-bred bonus presented by the Florida Thoroughbred Breeders’ and Owners’ Association.

Spirit Wind Affirms Trainer's Choice With Victory in Poinsettia

Trainer Saffie Joseph Jr. elected to send Spirit Wind to Oaklawn Park for the $150,000 Poinsettia Saturday after cross-entering her to defend her title in Gulfstream Park’s Sugar Swirl on the same day and the 5-year-old Florida-bred mare certified the decision with a determined victory. Spirit Wind took the $150,000 Poinsettia against six other fillies and mares, 3-years-old and older, for her third stakes win in eight starts this year.

This Day in Florida Thoroughbred History - Shake You Down Wins the Grade 3 Gravesend at Aqueduct

DECEMBER 21, 2003—Florida-bred Shake You Down led from start as the 124-pound highweight to win the Grade 3 Gravesend at Aqueduct Racetrack under jockey Michael Luzzi. Giving away between eight and 14 pounds to his six rivals, the son of Ocala Stud’s Montbrook won by two-and-a-half lengths as the 4-5 favorite in the six-furlong contest, covering the distance in 1:09.55 on the fast track. Way to the Top was second with Gators N Bears third.
