Preceptors – please share the Spring Fling opportunity with any students who are working with you in the next few months.

The MAFP Foundation is excited to sponsor the 9th Annual Future in Family Medicine Spring Fling on April 22 at the Sheraton Refuge in Flowood. This conference is specifically designed for medical students and residents. The meeting will be held in conjunction with the MAFP Spring Conference for practicing physicians, so there will be opportunities to network while gaining exposure to speakers, topics, and procedural skills that attendees might not have access to during medical school or residency training.

Exhibitors will be on hand including family medicine residencies, rural hospitals, and other employers. Students and residents will have the opportunity to run for the Academy and Foundation boards. Topics include interviewing tips, debt management, new physician panels, contract negotiations, speed dating through the types of family medicine, and procedural workshops. The conference is free to attend and will offer overnight rooms for out-of-town students and residents.

Do CME Hours Report Both Ways Between ABFM, AAFP?
When reporting CME hours for maintenance of certification and re-election purposes, physicians have asked us how to report their hours to the American Academy of Family Physicians (AAFP) and the American Board of Family Medicine (ABFM). Here are two things family physicians should know:
  • AAFP sends all your reported CME hours to ABFM. You do not need to take any action for this to happen - just report your hours using one of the methods below.
  • ABFM does *not* report MOC hours to AAFP. However, it is easy for you to do it yourself. Just download your hours from ABFM's website and send the report to AAFP. Keep in mind your CME history on ABFM will only reflect your current stage.

Here's how to report your CME to AAFP:
  • Fax certificates of participation to 913-906-6075.
  • Call AAFP at 1-800-274-2237 during business hours
  • Report CME online
  • E-mail AAFP at aafp@aafp.org

Do you need more information about how to refer your patients to the MS Tobacco Quitline or the ACT Center?

Contact DeAnna Dillard to arrange a 1-hour T2P presentation (lunch provided).
Speak Out on Non-Compete Agreements

About one in five American workers—approximately 30 million people—are bound by a non-compete clause and are thus restricted from pursuing better employment opportunities. The Federal Trade Commission proposes preventing employers from entering into non-compete clauses with workers and requiring employers to rescind existing non-compete clauses. The Commission estimates that the proposed rule would increase American workers’ earnings between $250 billion and $296 billion per year. The Commission is asking for the public’s opinion on its proposal to declare that non-compete clauses are an unfair method of competition, and on the possible alternatives to this rule that the Commission has proposed. The Commission invites the public to submit comments on the proposed rule. The FTC will review the comments and may make changes, in a final rule, based on the comments and on the FTC’s further analysis of this issue. The comment period is open through Mar 20, 2023.

The AAFP strongly supports this proposed rule, which would ensure patients have continued access to their physicians and would allow physicians to freely practice medicine in their communities. We are asking MAFP members to send this Speak Out message that asks Members of Congress to support the FTC's efforts.
