The Maryland Theatre hosts
Top of the World: A Carpenters Tribute
| |
Saturday, April 29, 2023 at 7:00 PM
Top Of The World is The World’s Premiere Tribute to The Carpenters! Fronted by singer Debbie Taylor, her Karen Carpenter vocal resemblance is absolutely astonishing. She is backed by a seven piece band consisting of top-notch, professional industry musicians who have had amazing careers in their own right. The band members are all multi-instrumentalists and at times use 3 keyboards to recreate the incredibly complex arrangements created by Richard Carpenter. The attention to detail paired with saxophone, trumpet, flute and many more instruments complete every song to perfection!
This show does not use tracks or pick up musicians like other shows. This is an 8 piece band that travels and performs all shows together. Additionally, they have a multi-media slideshow which can be seen on their “Live Video” below.
Who can forget the incomparable music of the Carpenters? The popular brother/sister duo of the 70’s and early 80’s gave us some of the most unforgettable ballads and melodic pop songs of all time.
This Carpenters Tribute Band brings the most authentic versions of the Carpenters music to the stage. No doubt, you will be singing along as they perform hits like; “Close To You,” “We’ve Only Just Begun,” “Rainy Days And Mondays,” “Please Mr. Postman,” and “Yesterday Once More,” to name a few. Debbie captures the warm tones and contralto range that made Karen’s voice so unique. Sit back and enjoy as Debbie and her band take you on a nostalgic journey through the Carpenters greatest hits while sharing some of the backstories behind the music.

Main Street Middletown welcomes the Maryland House and Garden Pilgrimage to our downtown on Saturday, May 6, 2023, for an unforgettable tour of Middletown’s treasured historical properties!
The Maryland House and Garden Pilgrimage is a beloved Maryland tradition to tour the state’s finest samples of architectural gems. Middletown certainly fits that description with over 250 years of architectural history compacted on its 3-mile-long Main Street situated along the Maryland historic and scenic byway, the Old National Road. Pilgrims will have access to tour the interiors of ten historic properties downtown, all within walking distance. Properties range in age, from the late 1700s to the early 20th century, and include notable Federal-style homes, elegant Victorian homes, one-of-a-kind commercial structures, and the rarely-seen interior of a turn-of-the-century operating room.
Middletown’s history is based on its agricultural roots, and the pockets of in-town gardens reflect the passion for beautiful and fruitful landscapes. Lunches will be catered by Tapia’s on Main.
The properties on the tour will have docents stationed inside each property and the event begins at 10:00 o’clock in the morning and ends at 5:00 pm.

MAD Dance presents “Portal”
MAD Dance presents “Portal,” an innovative dance theatre performance, for two nights only, May 12 and May 13, 2023, at 7:30 pm. The performances take place at the intimate Y Arts Center, 115 East Church Street, Frederick, MD. Sliding scale tickets are available via Eventbrite (https://MAD-Dance-Portal.eventbrite.com), and advance purchase is highly recommended.
“Portal” is a pandemic-induced contemplation of people’s connection to body and earth, and a call to reconnect, get grounded, and take meaningful action to address the environmental crises caused by climate change. The pandemic assaulted our minds and bodies and left us scarred, and shell-shocked. It made us less connected to nature, fearful and tight, obsessed with cleanliness, and uncertain about how our bodies would cope. “Portal” offers a vision of reclaiming connections to self, others, and earth.
Incorporating a poignant and impactful poem by climate justice advocate Neha Misra, a rich and contemplative score by composer Cam Millar, MAD Dance Co-Directors Kitty Clark, and Ray Shaw - in signature style - have crafted an immersive environment of vibrant colors, reflective surfaces, and images of forests in which non-linear communication thrives and a subtle, raw, and beautiful intimacy ensues.
The development of “Portal” was supported in part by the Maryland State Arts Council (msac.org). This performance is supported in part by the Frederick Arts Council and the National Endowment for the Arts.
For more information, call 301-331-4398 or find MAD Dance on Facebook (www.facebook.com/MAD.Dance.Theatre).

Landscapes & Legends of Norway: William Singer & His Contemporaries, May 27–Sept. 17, 2023. Beat the summer heat with a visit to the mountains of Norway. Museum founder William Henry Singer, Jr. loved the Norwegian landscape and painted it in all seasons — from the cool greens of spring to the icy blues of glacial winters. This exhibition uses Singer’s work and that of his contemporaries in the museum collection to look at the impact of Norway on the imaginations of various artists. A series of watercolors depicting Norse legends (yes, Loki and Thor) by American artist Frank Morse Rummel are also a highlight of the exhibition. Organized by the Washington County Museum of Fine Arts from its permanent collection. Generous support for this exhibition has been provided by James & Melinda Marsden and Paul & Lotta Mellott.

Two Rivers Chamber Orchestra
TICKETS ON SALE NOW FOR MAY 20&21 ORCHESTRA CONCERT IN SHEPHERDSTOWN
The Friends of Music will present two performances of a Two Rivers Chamber Orchestra concert in Shepherdstown during the May 20-21 weekend.
The first performance will be at 7:30 p.m. on Saturday the 20th the second will be a 3:00 p.m. matinee on Sunday, the 21st.
Both performances will be held in the Shepherdstown Presbyterian Church at 100 West Washington Street.
The concert is entitled "Folk 'n Fancy." The program will include performances of the Romanian Folk Dances of 20th Century Hungarian composer Béla Bartok; a work entitled "Elegy" by Amanda Harberg, a contemporary American composer; the Concertante in B flat major by Franz Danzi, a German contemporary of Beethoven's; and the Symphony No. 1 in D major by 19th Century French composer Charles Gounod.
The featured soloists will be three principal members of the Two Rivers Chamber Orchestra: Jason Diggs, viola; Barbara Spicher, flute; and David Drosinos, clarinet. The Friends' music director, Jed Gaylin, will conduct.
Gaylin said the music to be played "moves from the gutsy, earthy sounds of Bartok’s authentic portrayal of the folk melodies and rhythms of Romania to the elegant sparkle of both Danzi’s Concertante and Gounod’s effervescent First Symphony." He said the Harberg Elegy is a "stunningly lyrical work."
Admission to the concert will be free for Friends of Music members. The ticket price for others will be $40 per person. Tickets can be purchased on the Friends' website at www.friendswv.org; or by mail (FOM, PO Box 220, Shepherdstown, WV 25443); or, if space is available, at the church at both performances. Visa and Master Card will be accepted. For more information, contact the Friends' office at info@friendswv.org or 304-876-5765.
