We are saddened to hear of the passing of Dr. Walter Lawrence. Dr. Lawrence served on faculty with the Department of Surgery for over 30 years and was the founding director of the Massey Cancer Center. Even post-retirement, he remained incredibly active on campus, continuing to support the education of our residents and trainees. Dr. Lawrence touched so many lives and we know his amazing contributions to VCU will be felt for years to come. Our deepest condolences to the family and many friends of Dr. Lawrence.

Congratulations to Dr. Jad Khoraki on getting his most recent study published! Per-oral endoscopic myotomy (POEM) is a relatively new minimally invasive surgical approach to treat achalasia or other esophageal motility disorders (through an upper GI endoscopy, no abdominal incisions). The study which is now published in Surgery reports estimates of procedure utilization in, complication rates, length of stay, and cost of POEM compared to the standard laparoscopic approach (Heller myotomy) using nationally-representative data from the National Inpatient Sample. Read about the study and their findings here.

Employee Spotlight: Kristin Hairston
This employee spotlight was done by Madeleine Ragan, a senior at VCU, who interviewed Kristin Hairston as her year end project. She will be graduating in December!

Kristin is the Thoracic Surgery Scheduling Coordinator for the Department of Surgery and has been doing it for four years this coming February. When I asked her to define her position, she explained that she is the main person that does the authorizations for 10 to 12 divisions of the department of surgery which is about 90 surgeons! She also handles reimbursement if anyone from the administrative team needs assistance. To Kristin, the most satisfying part of her job is getting the approval from senior leadership about a suggestion that she had made. It makes her feel like she is important and that she helped make an important decision! On the other hand, the most challenging part is the insurance companies and how many hoops they have to jump through to be able to get things covered. She also mentioned how specialty care is difficult because most insurance companies don’t cover that, so then they have to try and figure a way around it. When Kristin is not at work she enjoys music, food, and traveling! She also has picked up a new hobby which is becoming certified in cosmetic tattooing. Once COVID-19 started she had been wanting to try something new and thought this was the perfect thing to start and has been loving it! It was a pleasure to hear about Kristin Hairston and she makes a wonderful addition to the department.
