Black History Month Celebrated
DECA celebrated Black History Month at all three campuses with exuberence this year! We saw spirit weeks, amazing performances by both staff and students, and even a fundraiser for a local black business owner. All was done to recognize and honor the contributions, achievements, and experiences of African Americans throughout history and today.

It was a great opportunity to increase cultural awareness, promote diversity and inclusion, and foster a sense of pride and understanding of African American heritage and culture.
We are thankful for the work that many put into making this month a memorable one; Sierra Leone, Devon Richardson, Jalyn Gilbert, and the many teams across our district that helped to pull out all the stops!
Safety Protocols for Emergencies
Our students' safety is our first priority. We recently had a weather event where we had to put all three schools into a "Secure Campus". Administration, teachers, and students did their part to execute proper protocols and stay safe during the storm.

This lead us to an understanding that parents could use some pointers of what we do and what you can do during such an event to help us in keeping kids safe.

TERMS:
Shelter In Place
Danger in the outdoor environment - NO ONE allowed out of building until all clear
Drop, Cover, and Hold On
Explosion or earthquake - get under desks and stay safe until all clear. - NO ONE allowed out of building until all clear

DECA HIGH
Counselor's Corner
According to research, school lunch is critical to student health and well-being and ensures students have the nutrition they need throughout the day to learn. Research shows that receiving school lunches reduces food insecurity, obesity rates, and poor health.

It's important that we remind students to refrain from eating junk food from the gas stations in the morning and pick up something from the cafeteria instead. Even a cereal bar and apple can make a difference in energy level, attention, and mood. -Mr. Harper

A Note From The Nurse

There have been multiple confirmed cases of strep throat reported to the school. It is possible that your student may have been exposed. Properly treated cases are no longer infectious, however please watch for symptoms that may appear within 2-5 days after exposure.

Strep throat and Scarlet fever (strep with a red rash) are bacterial infections, spread by direct contact with the mucus or droplets from an infected individual.

Common signs and symptoms include:
  • Red, sore throat
  • Fever, cold sweats
  • White spots on the back of the throat, tonsils, or tongue
  • Swollen, tender neck glands
  • Trouble swallowing
  • Tiny red spots on the roof of mouth
  • Headache and or body aches
  • Fatigue.

Call your healthcare provider if your child has these symptoms or you suspect strep. For an accurate diagnosis a throat culture must be taken and confirmed by your child's doctor. Your child must remain home for 24 hours after antibiotic treatment begins and fever is gone.
Please call the school nurse if you have any questions or concerns.

DECA PREP
DECA PREP Gives Back
DECA PREP families should be proud.

As a united front, you were able to help support our local Black Business Owner, Shamika Miliner at Your Vegan Chef.

The students enjoyed meeting her in person at their "Black History" month Harambee. They all gasped and giggled at the thought of not eating bacon or chicken.

Later that week, when you paid $2.00 for your child to enjoy the "out of uniform" day in February, you helped raise over $600 for Your Vegan Chef! It was a #DECAproud moment for sure!
A Note From The Nurse:
Dear DECA PREP families,

It can be hard to know when to keep a child home and when to send them to school. Here are some tips that can help:

  • Has your child had a fever within the last 24 hours? Tylenol and Motrin may mask a fever but this does not mean your child should be at school. We ask that students are fever free for 24 hours without the use of fever-reducing medications before coming back to school.

  • Has your child ever thrown up or had diarrhea before school but you sent them because they didn’t have a fever? Illness does not always mean fever. If your child has had vomiting or diarrhea within the last 24 hours please keep them home.

  • Has your child ever woken up with their eye(s) stuck closed with crust or has a red eye with discharge? This is a sign that your child should stay home and be checked by a doctor before coming back to school.

  • Has your child been diagnosed with strep throat? Kids with strep throat will need to be on antibiotics for 24 hours before coming back to school.

While it is inconvenient, keeping your kids home when sick is important to limit the spread of illness. We recommend all families create a back up plan in the event of illness or being called to pick up your child. - Nurse Vrabel
