Reopening of Eagle Pass and El Paso Crossings
Ag organizations are pleased with the U.S. Customs and Border Protection's announcement of the reopening of the Eagle Pass and El Paso rail crossings into Mexico. Twenty-five percent of U.S. corn exports into Mexico go through El Paso and Eagle Pass. Read more online here.

Lothian Elevator Seeking Long-Term Manager
Anne Arundel County will solicit bids later this month to find a long-term operator for their recently purchased grain elevator in Lothian County. Because the county's short-term lease with Warfield Brothers, announced in September, was tied to an "emergency procurement," the county is required to re-bid the contract. Read more here.

EPA Update on Next Steps for Chlorpyrifos
In light of the November 2, 2023 Eight Circuit Court of Appeal's decision to vacate the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's 2021 final rule effectively prohibiting the use of the pesticide Chlorpyrifos on food or feed crops, EPA is issuing an update on its intended next steps. Upon issuance of the Eighth Circuit's mandate all Chlorpyrifos tolerances would automatically be in effect once again. In conformance with the Eighth Circuit's ruling and after issuance of the mandate, EPA intends to issue a notice correcting the Code of Federal Regulations to reflect the court's reinstatement of Chlorpyrifos tolerances. Now Enroll in FAS ARC and PLC Programs for 2024 Crop Year
The USDA announced that agricultural producers can now enroll in the Farm Service Agency's Agriculture Risk Coverage (ARC) and the Price Loss Coverage (PLC) programs for the 2024 crop year. The deadline to complete enrollment and any election change is March 15, 2024. Read more online here.

Doe Harvest Challenge
Lower County Farm Bureau's are working together for a 2024 doe harvest challenge. The challenge will be from January 5th to 7th. For each doe or anterless deer harvested, hunters will receive a ticket and a duplicate ticket will be placed in a drawing. There will be 12 tickets drawn for $1,000 each on Monday, January 8th.

Maryland's Healthy Soils Competitive Fund
MDA is accepting applications for its Healthy Soils Competitive Fund from Jan 3rd to March 6th. If you have an innovative conservation idea for your farm, this program is for you! It provides financial assistance to qualifying farmers who want to adopt a range of soil health or agroforestry practices. Biden Backs Ethanol Industry on Low-Emission Aviation Fuel Tax Credits
The Biden administration said on Friday it will recognize a methodology favored by the ethanol industry in guidance to companies looking to claim tax credits for sustainable aviation fuel (SAF), a pivotal win for the politically powerful U.S. corn lobby. But the administration will also update the methodology by March 1, which leaves some uncertainty for corn-based ethanol producers, as it could ultimately tighten requirements around SAF feedstocks. Fertigation Highlights N-TIME Nutrient Management Platform
Jackson Stansell, Founder and CEO of Sentinel Fertigation describes his new software platform, N-TIME. A nutrient management platform, N-TIME focuses on nitrogen recommendation for farmers, specifically those applying fertilizer in season. By analyzing multiple sources of satellite imagery, N-TIME isolates the impact nitrogen has on potential yields, tracks nitrogen sufficiency and determines a seven day nitrogen demand for the observed crops. ProGro BIO Announces Completion of 2023 Microbial Crop Trial Program

VA's Hula Breaks His Won World Yield Mark
Mid-Atlantic farmers placed first in five of the six national divisions they are eligible in for the 2023 National Corn Growers Yield Contest. The national winners include five-time contest record holder, David Hula of Charles City, VA who broke his own world record with a yield entry of 623.8439 bushels per acre. Read more here.

1890 National Scholars Program
USDA is accepting applications for the USDA 1890 National Scholars Program, which aims to encourage students at 1890 land-grant universities to pursue food and agriculture career paths. The application deadline is March 1, 2024. The program is available to eligible high school seniors entering their freshman year of college as well as rising college sophomores and juniors. MAEF Opens 2024 Academic & Seibel Scholarships
The Maryland Agricultural Education Foundation (MAEF) is now accepting applications for the 2024 Academic and Seibel Scholarships. The recipients of the MAEF Academic Scholarship will receive $1,500 in support of their academic achievements and pursuit of a career in agricultural or Extension education.
