KME Receives Purple Star Designation

This week, the Ohio Department of Education announced that Kings Mills Elementary has received the Purple Star designation and is a member of the Purple Star Class of 2023. This year's class includes 165 schools from across the state.

The Purple Star Award recognizes schools that show a major commitment to students and families connected to our nation’s military. Schools that earn the award will receive a special Purple Star recognition to display on site.

A school is honored with a Purple Star if it completes the required activities need for designation. Ohio is home to 511 active Purple Star schools that dedicate time and supports to students in military families. KME joins J.F. Burns and South Lebanon Elementary as Kings Local School District Purple Star Schools.

Kings Treasurer's Office Receives Award

Congratulations to the Kings Treasurer's Office staff for receiving a clean audit report from the Ohio Auditor of State, awarding them the Auditor of State Award for Excellence in Financial Reporting.

The District also received the Highest Achievement in Open and Transparent Government for the 3rd year in a row! Only 16% of entities audited in the State of Ohio were awarded this achievement.

This is the 7th year in a row that the District has received this honor. The financial audit report is designed to provide citizens, taxpayers, investors, and creditors with a general overview of the District’s finances and show the District’s accountability for the money it receives. Kings Local Schools' financial audit report can be found by searching for the District at ohioauditor.gov.

Congratulations to Kings Treasurer, Mike Morrow, and his staff, Jane Boehm, Lori Birch, Dawn Rich, and Jill Nickels who do the work daily in order to make the Treasurer's Office run smoothly!

KHS Junior Receives Highest Possible ACT Score

Congratulations to Kings High School Junior, Johnathan VonAllmen who received a composite score of 36 on the ACT college entrance exam.

Johnathan was expecting a high score since he took the exam previously and received a 35. He said, "I knew it was achievable." His future plans include studying Paleontology, which means an undergraduate in Biology or Geology. He would like to receive a Ph.D. in Paleontology to become a college professor or museum curator.

He said due to his high score, he is definitely looking into fancier schools. He said, "Ultimately, I'll just be looking to get into as good a college as possible like most."

Fewer than 0.25% of ACT participants walk away with a top score. Of 1.34 million Class of 2022 students who took the ACT, only 3,376 earned a perfect score, according to an ACT news release. The exam comprises English, math, reading, and science sections, each scored between 1-36. A student’s resulting composition score is calculated by averaging all four sections’ scores together.

KHS Senior Reflection Night

Kings High School Seniors participated in the annual Community Service Reflection Night on Thursday, April 21. This is a night when all seniors report on how they performed their required community service hours.

In order to graduate, KHS seniors must fulfill 50 hours of community service. During the Senior Reflection Night, students give a short presentation about the impact of community service in their lives. Many students used technology such as videos, movies, or PowerPoint presentations to reflect on their service experiences.

JFB Therapy Dog Retires

Today was a bittersweet day at J.F. Burns Elementary. The Kings District's first therapy dog, Raven has officially retired.

Raven has been a beloved staff member at JFB and has made a positive impact on many children's lives. Her handler and JFB School Counselor, Emily Sander said that due to some health issues, it was time for her to retire. However, Sander has adopted a new dog; a male Moyen Poodle named Sunny Ray who will be trained this summer and hopefully begin to work at the start of the new school year.

The celebration parade was organized to allow the students at JFB to say goodbye to Raven and meet Sunny. We will miss Raven but we are excited to welcome Sunny to our Kings Family.

Watch the Retirement Celebration here.
