Fishing Along The Oregon Trail

Mrs. Amann's fourth graders are making their way along the Oregon Trail. Pictured here, students are "fishing" on the Blue River. There aren't any restaurants on the way West, so they must make good use of all the resources they find.

One of the things pioneers must have is salt and spices to preserve the fish they catch. Before setting out on their travels, they had to have such items on their supply list.

Moving was sure a different experience 150 years ago.

1st Grade Leprechaun Traps

Foiled again! Those rascally leprechauns got away again! First graders designed elaborate traps to catch these little characters in anticipation of St. Patrick's Day. Wouldn't you know, they got away, but not before trashing Miss Teterud's and Mrs. Scaglione's classrooms. The nerve!

Maybe next year we'll get 'em.

MIDDLE SCHOOL NEWS

New Teachers Share At Chapel

On Thursday at our Chapel service, we heard from our amazing new (one new to middle school) teachers. Kaitlin Bingham (sixth grade) spoke about how you may not be the most athletic, maybe you don’t get the highest grades, or maybe you’re not the most popular, but what if you became the most kind?

Sha Orton (sixth grade PE) reminded us that some of the most interesting and "weird" people make the best friends (she’s not wrong- speaking from experience). Ellie Gerlitz was drawn to Cascade from seeing the impact the school had on her cousins, who are alumni.

Students also heard from Maegan Holden (Teacher's Aide), Hannah Mannenbach (seventh and eighth grade PE), Ellie Gerlitz (sixth grade), and Jessica Brown (sixth grade). They’re all tremendous additions to the CCMS team.

Let's Dance!

Our students have been working their way through a dance unit in PE. Mrs. Mannenbach and Mrs. Holden demonstrated the moves, then the boys and girls practiced a little before dancing for real. Athletics and artistry coming together.

It was fun watching the kids work their way through the learning process, with some taking to it right away, and others stepping out of their comfort zones. We also learned that many of the boys and the girls still think that the opposite gender has cooties.

6th Grade PE: Rock Climbing

Mrs. Orton introduced sixth grade students to the world of rock climbing. It's a lot of fun, and there's a lot to learn with regards to equipment and safety measures.

She took took her classes last week on a rock-climbing excursion at the Rogue Rock Gym. Mrs. Orton says, "They had a blast!"

While she enjoyed it, Orton says one of the boys beat her in a climb off! She attempted a challenging climb and "got too pumped out to finish it." Silas Langseth was "giving me advice", so she told him to come over and show her how it was done!

Orton says she "bet" that if Silas succeeded in the climbing route, he could take a pass on a "Food for Thought" assignment that she hands out weekly. He succeeded! So he gets a pass on it, and Orton says, "(Silas) made us all proud." She also gives a shout out to TA Seth Scaglione who was a huge help.

HIGH SCHOOL NEWS

Careers Day '25

Where am I going? One of the great questions facing our students has to do with life after high school. Will I go to college? Is college necessary for the field I'm interested in? Am I locked in with the career I'm interested in, or am I open to other possibilities?

On Friday, our Careers Day event helped to give our juniors some experience and food for thought concerning their futures. Representatives from a variety of fields came to participate in panel discussions, networking, and provide experience in reviewing a resume and going through the interview process, including in-person and video interviews.

What a great opportunity to do career exploration at this early stage in life. A big thank you to Mrs. Schaffner for organizing this event, and to all the teachers, staff, and all of the panelists/interviewers who gave generously of their time. There's no question this day has had an impact on the students who attended.

Now at CCHS: Entrepreneurship 101

We're excited about this! In today's economy, more and more people are launching their own businesses. At Cascade Christian, there's an exciting new class that explores entrepreneurship and earns college credit a the same time. Here, senior Sadie Page tells us all about it:

Brain Bowl Team Advances To Championship

At Cascade Christian, we've got the brains, as well as the brawn. Kayla Crenshaw is one of our coaches for the team, and gives us a great report from last Saturday's meet:

For the second year in a row, our Brains in Black were undefeated at the SOU tournament. We beat St. Mary's, South Medford, Phoenix, Grants Pass, and Ashland in the Division A Varsity league. We go on to the filmed finals at Southern Oregon PBS on April 19th. Stay tuned for the air date!

Team members: Raena Crisp, Sadie Page, Kyle Krutsch (Captain), Sam Wang, Gabriel Lockard, Josephine Wewerka (Captain), Ford Moening, Sarah Kephart, and Tanaya Mahar. Team member Myles Anderson did not compete due to his swim commitments and neither did Caroline Carter who had a theater commitment (more news to follow), but both made vital contributions to our team this year. Unfortunately, Saige Griffin was ill but we hope she is able to join us in the finals!

Ms. Bryant and Mrs. Crenshaw were so impressed by the fun teamwork and sportsmanship they witnessed.

Chapel Breaks Into Small Groups

From time to time, we will take our Thursday mornings, when we usually have a chapel service, and break into small groups. It's a fantastic opportunity to get into God's Word and ponder spiritual matters in a cozier setting.

Broke into small groups during chapel time: Mr. Gettman spoke on Psalm 1, contrasting the righteous and the wicked. Mr. Wine spoke about trusting God with your plans, as he presented his testimony of how God brought him to Cascade as an illustration. Our freshman class broke into smaller group discussions, creating skits based on the book of Philemon.

Musical at CCHS This Thursday!

Cascade Christian's much-awaited production of You're A Good Man, Charlie Brown is set for this Thursday at 6:30 pm. Tickets are still available! We sat in on their Monday practice, and we know you will be impressed with the talent of our fine cast. Don't miss it!

Powder Puff '25

The rain did not dampen the spirits of all who were at the annual Powder Puff football game Friday night. The Sophomores and Juniors took back the trophy with a win over the Freshmen/Senior Team, anchored by the ground game spearheaded by Morgan Samhammer and Addie Burns. Proceeds from the event helped raise funds for this year's prom, "Moonlit Masquerade."

David Henry ('07) Reaches Coaching Pinnacle

A member of Cascade Christian's first ever championship basketball team has led Westside Christian to their first ever state basketball title. David Henry, who was with the program as a championship player and assistant coach, has guided the Eagles basketball program since 2015. After finishing as the Oregon 3A runner-up to the Challengers the last two seasons, Westside bested Pleasant Hill 65-47 to win the OSAA 3A championship at Marshfield High School in Coos Bay.

In a head coaching career that began at Westside Christian in 2015, Henry won 148 games. It was a long, steady climb, but he came out on top in his final game as WCHS coach. David, his wife Taylor (Darby), and 2-year-old daughter Peyton are moving to Arizona, where Taylor (a 2011 CCHS grad) works at Dutch Bros. HQ in Accounting.

David has also been wearing a second hat at Westside as athletic director. His future plans include working as an Executive Coach and in Finance, and he is interested in continuing to coach basketball in Arizona. For several years, he worked as a mortgage broker in Southern Oregon and Portland.

Congratulations, Coach!
