A Letter from Race Committee

 www.mudhead.org

The Race Committee has emerged from a well-deserved hibernation and are readying for the 2025 racing season. We’re excited to bring back familiar favorites: the Donzo Wednesday Night Racing Series, the Mudhead Benefit Cup (in support of Sails Up 4 Cancer) and the Mudnite Madness Overnight. We have changes we want you to be aware of in advance of the season.

1.    The Mudheads are moving to Clubspot as the regatta registration website for the bulk of our 2025 events. Due to Yacht Scoring’s recent changes, we chose a platform offering the best future for stability and ease of use You will need to create a new account to register to race. Payment will only be accepted on Clubspot for the 2025 season. (no checks) https://theclubspot.com/regatta/HcDbD5AgiF

2.    The Race Committee, with the Mudhead board, are simplifying the entry fee structure for the Donzo Wednesday Night Series. We strive to keep racing costs affordable, inclusive and racer friendly as possible. To ensure the management of the series is seamless, we have made the 2025 Donzo entry fee $250 for the entire season regardless of series/races started. The RC will continue to score the sub-series (Spring, Summer, Women at the Helm) separately and continue to apply summer penalties.

3.    The Mudhead RC is instituting a ratings cap on PHRF classes. The RC decided seeing 40-foot modern racer/cruisers on the starting line with 50-year-old boats with rating spreads of 100 between them is not producing feel-good moments on the racecourse. As such, boats with a PHRF rating less than 120 will be asked to race in an ORC class. This cap will not apply to small sport boats such as the Viper 640, Melges 24 or similar small -planing sailboats to the extent that we have enough entries. The goal, at the end of the day, is to create and foster fair and fun racing. If you have questions regarding obtaining an ORC rating, please email the RC at MudheadRC@gmail.com .

4.    Reminder: The Donzo Notice of Race states that in Section 4.1 that “All entrants shall be members of MRMSA”. If you haven’t sent in your dues for 2025, make sure to do so in order to be scored!

5.    The 2025 Mudhead Benefit Cup for Sails Up 4 Cancer will be changing to a Pursuit Race. For those unfamiliar with the concept, Pursuit Races provide a low-key way to get on the water with your friends in a less-intense atmosphere. In a nutshell, the RC computes the predicted time for each boat to complete a fixed course such that, based on each boat’s rating, each boat gets its own starting time such that all boats should theoretically finish at around the same time. Results are based on actual finishing place, not my time calculation. This format seems to lend itself well to the Benefit Cup’s purpose: doing good by raising money for charity. This registration remains on Yacht Scoring: https://www.yachtscoring.com/emenu/17020

6.    Lastly, we have a new race: The 2025 Mudhead Fall Regatta on September 20, 2025. Don’t like watching your crew swelter on the rail in summer heat? We have you covered! Stay tuned for information.
