December 30, 2023

Dear Friends:

As 2023 draws to a close, I want to extend my personal gratitude to the thousands of citizens who have supported our work and helped protect and preserve our community during the past year. We promote smart development that complies with the law, fosters our local economy, and meets the needs of the community.

No matter where you live on the Waccamaw Neck, Keep It Green (KIG) and Keep It Green Advocacy (KIGA), along with their dedicated team of volunteers and supporters, have made a positive difference in your neighborhood over the years:

  • LITCHFIELD: Prevented a zoning change to allow high density condominium units on land zoned for recreation and NO residential use. This zoning change would have paved the way for Founders Group International (the Chinese corporation that owns most Pawleys Island golf courses) to sell off its golf courses for housing developments. It’s happening in Myrtle Beach and it could happen here. Georgetown County does not protect Planned Developments.

  • PAWLEYS ISLAND MAINLAND: Blocked a zoning change to build a 182-unit multi-family apartment complex in a quiet neighborhood off Petigru Drive zoned for NO residential use. This would have generated thousands of additional cars per day on secondary roads.

  • PAWLEYS CREEK: Prevented a zoning change to quadruple residential density along the salt marsh off Blockade Drive.

  • HAGLEY & WAVERLY: Stopped a zoning change to allow high density apartments on land zoned for NO residential use in Hagley near Founders Club, and fought against multi-family housing at Waverly & Kings River Road that would worsen existing flooding and traffic.

  • PRINCE GEORGE / DEBORDIEU: Filed suit against the county challenging a zoning change to double residential density in violation of the comprehensive plan on land east of US 17 just north of Prince George. This could set a precedent for arbitrary zoning changes and density increases on hundreds of acres of land. KIGA has been successful on all motions and the case is currently on appeal by a defendant.

  • PARKERSVILLE NEIGHBORHOOD OF PAWLEYS ISLAND: Appealed the improper approval of three major high density multi-family subdivisions on land designated by the comprehensive plan as medium density.

  • MERCOM: Filed suit against the county for the improper approval of a zoning change and planned development amendment to build a major subdivision consisting of high density multi-family rental housing on land zoned for NO residential use.

  • MURRELLS INLET: Prevented a zoning change to increase residential density on Wachesaw Drive.

  • ENTIRE WACCAMAW NECK: Filed legal actions demanding Georgetown County follow existing state law and bring zoning throughout the Waccamaw Neck into compliance with its comprehensive plan. The county's neglect of this mandatory statutory duty for more than 25 years has resulted in substantial permanent damage to our community.

  • OTHER: Advocated for adherence to and enforcement of tree ordinances, state and local stormwater regulations, commercial corridor overlay zone laws, and the conduct of legitimate and objective updated local traffic studies.

  • WORKFORCE HOUSING: We understand the need for workforce housing in our community. None of the proposed projects or zoning changes listed above were workforce housing.

Together, we are making a positive difference.
