OBEDIENCE IN THE LITTLE THINGS

It didn’t seem that harmful to take a piece of clothing from the spoil. After all, what is a piece of clothing? But it was not a small thing with God.
The background for this is found in Joshua chapter 6. The army of Israel had defeated Jericho, but before the battle they were told in Joshua 6:18-19, “and ye, in any wise keep yourselves from the accursed thing, let ye make yourselves accursed, when ye take of the accursed thing, and make the camp of Israel a curse, and trouble it. But ALL the silver, and gold, and vessels of brass and iron, are consecrated unto the LORD: they shall come into the treasury of the LORD.”
They were warned by God not to take ANYTHING from Jericho for themselves. The gold, silver, brass, and iron belonged to the Lord. Everything else was to be destroyed.
One man, Achan, in chapter 7 had fought in the battle and coveted a Babylonian garment, silver, and gold, and hid them in his tent.
Not knowing what Achan had done, Joshua went on to the next city, Ai, to conquer it. It was small so he only took a few thousand warriors with him to conquer it. To their surprise, only thirty-six men from Ai chased them and defeated the army of a few thousand.
Joshua did not know what to do. He called on God and God told him that there was sin in the camp and that someone had taken the “accursed” things from Jericho. He found out it was Achan, and he, along with his whole family, and everything they owned, were stoned to death to end the trouble he had caused to Israel and their defeat at AI. Sadly, one man’s sin brought trouble to the whole camp, and destruction to his family.
There are just some things that should never be brought into our homes, including statues of “saints” along with Buddha statues, and more. Anything that represents a foreign God can “trouble” your “camp” or home. It can cause sickness, and even death. Clothing with skulls on it, and demonic entities can open a person up to trouble. Books from the “dark side” including Harry Potter and other books involving witchcraft are considered “accursed things.” For more info on things to avoid click here.
Often, we innocently bring things into our homes that lift God’s protection from us. Just like Achan, it not only hurts us, but also our family. We should do a “house cleaning” and get ride of anything that is considered “accursed.” It may seem small to you, but it is big to God.
