Our Calling is to be a Disciple!
The day after Jesus’ baptism, John the Baptist said to his disciples “I, myself, have seen and have testified that this is the Son of God. Here is the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world.” (John 1:29-41) The next day, John’s two disciples followed Jesus and remained with Him.
One of the disciples, Andrew, brought his brother, Simon Peter, saying, “We have found the Messiah.” The following day, Jesus went to Galilee, found Philip, and said, “Follow me.” Then, Philip told Nathaniel that they had found the One whom Moses and the Prophets prophesied about. Sometime later, James, John and the disciples also joined Jesus.
What does this story tell us about our Lord and the beginning of the Christian church? We are all called to be disciples, and we share our faith with others by inviting them to meet Jesus. And we can do this by inviting others to church. It is common to invite family, friends, colleagues and neighbors for a social gathering or sporting event. Have you considered inviting family and friends to Sunday school or a worship service?
We are in the season of Lent working toward Holy Week and Easter, during which St. Martin’s offers special services and events: the Wednesday Lenten adult programs, the Thursday afternoon Clergy Lent series, and the Holy Week services: Palm Sunday, Maundy Thursday, Good Friday and six wonderful Easter Sunday services.
I imagine we all know someone who might be delighted to be invited to church. Who knows? It might even be a life-changing experience for both of you! That is how Christ’s Church and St. Martin’s started and continue to grow because someone invited someone to come and meet Jesus.
Please pray about doing that and becoming the disciple you were called to be.
