Sunapee Happenings

“Springtime Welcome" by G.S. Tabar

The past week can best be described as a weather dichotomy.  Happy spring skiers took advantage of one last run for the season at Mt. Sunapee, while gardeners were eager to dig in the dirt, cheered on by daffodils blossoming forth.  The mercury climbed from the chilly 40’s to a balmy 83’!  "Ice Out" on Lake Sunapee was declared on April 14th! The speed of spring is indeed upon us as the symphony of peepers fills the night air.

CUE THE MUSIC

The music of the fifties and sixties conjures up many special memories for those of us commonly referred to as Baby Boomers. Music from a bygone era, these tunes bring us back to a more innocent time of our lives when kids didn’t grow up as fast and the influence of the media was not as prevalent.

The Rockin’ Daddios bring back some of the best loved songs of that time, sung in a doo-wop style with the accent on harmonies and FUN! Our performance is family friendly and guaranteed to warm your heart and bring a smile to your face. Get Your Tickets Now!

John Williams: Jurassic Park theme w/ Vienna Philharmonic

Mel Torme “April Showers” (an old favorite).

SUNAPEE SPOTLIGHT

It is with mixed emotions that we bid Mindy “farewell” and “congratulations” as she moves on to her new position as Assistant Librarian at NH State Library. Sunapee is ever so grateful for her years of outstanding service and innovative programming at The Abbott. We will miss you!

Everyone’s favorite night at SMHS!

It’s National Volunteer Recognition Week and Project Sunapee extends a heartfelt “Thank You” to the many volunteers who have been an integral part  of our mission as we “Nurture the Roots of Our Community”  in a myriad of ways from literally building a bridge, to supporting the schools, sponsoring the Sunapee Farmers Market and organizing special community events… Teddy Bear Picnic, Movies Under the Stars, and Holiday Celebrations. All efforts to be that 'small group'...

Margaret Meade describes. “Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world; indeed, it’s the only thing that ever has.”

LET'S GET ARTSY

We asked the cast...what is your favorite line?!

About Slow Food

A vacationing couple celebrates their anniversary at a Greek restaurant in Palm Springs—but will the marriage survive the service? As a needy waiter insinuates his way into their meal—and their lives—the couple examines their past and their future together. Playwright Wendy MacLeod brings us a tender comedy that delves deeply into what we hunger for.

Cascades of flowering nasturtium vines make their brief—but dramatic—appearance above the courtyard, celebrating the arrival of spring at the Museum. (Nasturtium blooms last about three weeks.) The annual Hanging Nasturtiums display continues an annual tradition started by Isabella during the week before Easter, marking the return of color to the Fenway.

Nasturtium vines (Tropaeolum majus) are started from seed in June, planted in late summer and trained in the Museum’s greenhouses throughout the winter to prepare them for their spectacular spring debut. The vines require continuous care in the greenhouse to ensure dramatic length—up to twenty feet—and require up to ten workers to install in the Museum. The result is a stunning display that cannot be found anywhere else.

LISTEN TO THE AUDIO WALK

To learn more about the legacy of this remarkable woman, Emily Franklin’s “The Lioness of Boston” is a good read.

"I couldn't put it down."--Jessica Shattuck, author of The Women in the Castle

A deeply evocative novel of the life of Isabella Stewart Gardner, a daring visionary who created an inimitable legacy in American art and transformed the city of Boston itself.
