The ISRI/GCR Fire Safety & Prevention Training for Recycling Facilities, held March 29 in San Antonio, was a huge success, attracting a full house of about 40 recycling professionals from around the Gulf Coast Region. The course sold out all seats for the first time and attracted so many attendees that additional tables and chairs were needed, said attendee and GCR Membership Chair GiGi Gebhardt of RISE Equipment/Himes Service Co. (Robinson, Texas). According to Gebhardt, the event attracted representatives from metal recycling companies, MRFs, paper recycling operations, waste management firms, and even a public recycling center south of Houston.
Ryan Nolte, ISRI’s senior director of safety outreach, and Kenn Kunze of IC Fire Prevention led the training, teaching attendees how to identify and control fire hazards to avoid significant fire-related losses. “Several attendees mentioned how helpful the training was and said they would send other operators to future training,” Gebhardt said, concluding that “this was a well-seized opportunity by recyclers in the Gulf Coast Region!”
