IMPORTANT CAM Transition Update | |
CAM Transition & Special General Membership Meetings | |
At the May 10, CAM Transition Workgroup meeting, the RFQ Committee presented their recommendation for the next CAM lead. May 12, the CAM Transition Workgroup voted to accept those recommendations. May 16, at the first General Membership Meeting, an overview of the CAM transition process will be presented to CoC Voting Membership.
May 25, at a special CoC General Membership meeting, CoC voting members will vote on the new CAM lead agency. In June, the transition process will begin to another CAM lead agency.

CoC Representatives Needed for
Strategic System Improvement Plan

The Detroit Continuum of Care (CoC) is seeking three representatives from the CoC general membership to serve on the Strategic Plan Oversight Committee. This committee will inform and guide the creation of the Detroit CoC's Strategic System Improvement Plan. This Plan will provide the Detroit community shared goals, priorities, and actions to prevent and end homelessness in the City of Detroit.
To apply for the committee position, please fill out this form. Applications should be submitted by May 18. The Detroit CoC General Membership will vote on candidates over email at the end of May. If you have questions, email Safiya Merchant at safiya.merchant@detroitmi.gov.

CoC Renewal Funding Webinar
The Homeless Action Network of Detroit (HAND) manages the decision-making and application process for the FY2023 HUD Continuum of Care Homeless Assistance Funding application. HUD requires Continuums of Care (CoC) to develop a process to determine whether projects eligible for renewal are (1) performing satisfactorily and (2) effectively addressing the needs for which they were designed. All agencies applying for renewal funding are encouraged to attend the applicant webinar on May 18, from 9:00 am - 11:00 am. The registration link for this webinar may be found here.

2023 HIC and PIT Update
The HMIS Regulatory Reporting Team successfully submitted the Detroit CoC 2023 Housing Inventory Count (HIC) and Point-in-Time (PIT) reports to HUD in April. A special shoutout to the HMIS Regulatory Reporting Team for their perseverance, patience, skill, and dependability.

In 2021, Detroit was awarded 5.7 million dollars to develop programming to support youth experiencing homelessness. Over the past two years, youth and stakeholders in our community have developed a strategic plan to end youth homelessness and designed programming for the 5.7 million dollars that fits into that plan.

These projects officially went live on April 1st. After two years of hard work, we want to pause and celebrate all that we have accomplished! We hope you'll celebrate with us!

Handlebars for the Homeless 2023
A Bicycle Tour Fundraiser to Feed the Homeless
August 20, 2023
Neighborhood Services Organization (NSO) is holding their annual Handlebars for the Homeless (H4H) bike tour. The guided tour is will be a 15 mile ride “through some of Detroit’s most notable neighborhoods.” There is also a virtual option where cyclists can raise money to support H4H. Proceeds from Handlebars for the Homeless will benefit NSO’s programs and services for individuals experiencing homelessness.

This premier event will be held in Washington and will feature the release and expert discussions of the 2023 ABA publication Model State Statutes to End Youth Homelessness. Detroit Phoenix Center (DPC) is a high-impact nonprofit organization that provides wrap-around services, basic need support, educational/academic/ workforce development programming, and other critical resources to youth and young adults in and around the Detroit area.

The Youth Action Board (YAB) is open to youth ages 16-24 who have lived with experiences with homelessness or any other adverse life experiences and possess a willingness to use their experiences and education as a medium to inform policymakers, service providers, and community members on best practices and strategies to prevent and end youth homelessness.

The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) and the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) are seeking public comment “about background screening issues affecting individuals who seek rental housing in the United States.”
Stop Tenant Screening, a coalition of housing and equitable technology advocates are asking people to submit their stories about the issues they’ve had obtaining housing because of tenant screening/background checks.

May is Mental Health Awareness Month | |
According to the 2022 Schoolhouse Connection “Infants and Toddlers Experiencing Homelessness” report, in Michigan alone, nearly 12,000 infants and toddlers ages 0-3 years old experienced homelessness from 2020 – 2021.
In this video, Erin Patterson from Schoolhouse Connection explains how the trauma of homelessness stifles brain development in infants and toddlers. She also speaks to the importance of identifying homelessness early in academic settings to help youth succeed. Find out more about legislation and how to advocate for homeless youth here.
