Sign up to work our spring Health Fair!
As announced last week, CHCS will hold a Health Fair with low-cost labs in Holton and St. Marys on April 29.

We are happy to be offering low-cost labs to these communities, but it takes many hands to hold a successful event. Please SIGN UP to help!
Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month
Let’s get the bad news out of the way: Colorectal cancer is among the most common cancers in the U.S., following breast cancer, prostate cancer, and lung cancer on the list. The good news is that, according to the American Cancer Society, the rate of people being diagnosed with colon or rectal cancer each year has dropped overall in the last several decades because more people are getting screened and making positive lifestyle changes.

March is Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month, so it’s the perfect time to make sure your cancer screenings are up-to-date.

Most colorectal cancers arise from colon polyps that start out as benign but progress from small polyps to cancer. Such polyps occur in about 30% of men and about 20% of women. Progression is believed to take an average of 10 years, which is why screening is effective at catching problems early. Colorectal cancer is highly treatable if it’s caught early.

According to Dr. Marcus Weiser, the best screening option is to schedule a colonoscopy. Dr. Weiser is a family physician and one of several CHCS physicians who perform colonoscopies. During a colonoscopy, physicians can see polyps and remove or biopsy them.

Delivering the WOW experience
Brandy Watkins, Holton Clinic Lead Nurse, shared the following.

During a Medicare visit, Susan Tanking found out a patient was having trouble getting up and down and needed a lift chair. He previously had one, but it was broken. Susan reached out to the local VFW, and they reached out to the community. VFW members retrieved the chair the next day, cleaned it, and delivered it to the patient within 48 hours.

Thank you for taking action to help this patient, Susan!
A patient's wife shared this story.

My husband went to Onaga clinic for his allergy shot, like he has done numerous times before. However, this time he had a horrible reaction and passed out, hitting the floor in the process. The clinic nurses and Dr. Zidek didn’t waste a second and were right on top of it, making sure his breathing was regulated and that he was going to be ok. Kim Bramhall, Joanie Hosfelt, and Tammy Handley were all big parts in his recovery as well as Dr. Zidek. There may have been other nurses involved, but those were the four in the clinic room with him when I arrived. I am so incredibly thankful for them all and their quick reactions. To say thanks, my husband brought them a giant chocolate chip cookie that says “You take my breath away.”

Thank you to the Onaga Clinic team for taking great care of this patient! We hope you enjoyed the treat!
Alexis Whorton, Home Health Manager, shared the following.

We have a patient who is currently on home health services and has an outside provider/surgeon. The patient has been having increased back pain and had orders for an MRI and CT scan to be completed. When she was contacted by her provider office in Topeka, they were scheduling a month out. We had the order sent to Access Services on a recent afternoon, and the patient had the MRI/CT completed the next day at Onaga. Thanks again for Access Services and our Radiology team for quick turnaround times!

Thank you to all who shared these excellent stories!

Thanks to all who attended the Centralia Clinic Open House last Friday! The new space looks great, and we enjoyed taking time to celebrate.

Jes Hipp, Clinic Nurse Manager, said, “I would like to give a big thank you to our board members, administration, and coworkers for making this project happen. Without everyone's support, patience, and flexibility, the remodel would not have taken place!”
Thanks for stopping by Cardiopulmonary Rehab and Community Home Care Equipment!
Thanks to all who took a break to visit the new Cardiopulmonary Rehabilitation and Community Home Care Equipment space in Onaga earlier this week. The new seated elliptical was a big hit! The space is both functional and beautiful. Signage should arrive soon.

An Open House for the public is being planned for early April.

Classroom to Career
Teresa Koch, Physical Therapy Assistant, completed the third of five Classroom to Career visits to USD 322 Onaga fourth graders this week.

Teresa spoke about the history of physical therapy, who needs physical therapy, and how healthcare providers work as a team to meet patients' needs. She also led students in activities including teaching someone how to stand up out of a chair, how to walk, and how to teach someone with hearing or visual deficits how to do exercises. She noted that the students had some great ideas! Thank you, Teresa!

The Classroom to Career program is sponsored by the Manhattan Area Chamber of Commerce and Pottawatomie County Economic Development Corporation, and its aim is to help students learn about jobs right here in northeast Kansas. In addition to visiting the class with different speakers, CHCS will also host the students for a field trip later in the spring.

Trash to treasure
St. Marys Manor residents celebrated the spring-like weather earlier this week by creating "trash art" from items that would eventually end up in the trash. The final result is a true treasure! Residents painted backgrounds to look like sky and cut butterflies out of a shower curtain to glue onto the background.

"Trash art" projects in the past have been done using pop bottles, celery, broccoli, Q-Tips, plastic forks and string, cotton balls, sticks, rocks, and more. The residents enjoy seeing their finished project!
