Type II achalasia has the best response to per-oral endoscopic myotomy of all subtypes. In this study, clinical outcomes of POEM were compared for type I and type III achalasia in treatment-naïve patients.
  • N of 82 patients (45 with type I and 37 with type III achalasia)
  • Primary outcomes were clinical success, change in Eckardt scores, and HRM parameters.
  • Compared to type III group, higher reduction rates of Eckardt score (type I vs type III, 78.6 vs. 66.9%, p = 0.03) and basal LES pressure (type I vs type III, 58.9 vs. 40.4%, P = 0.04) were observed in type I group.
