April 2023

From The Desk of the Executive Director

The Great Give® 2023 takes place from 8 a.m. on May 3rd, and ends at 8:00 p.m.Thursday, May 4. This year there are two chances to have your contribution matched for the Institute Library! A generous anonymous donor will match your gift, dollar for dollar, to $5000. The New Alliance Foundation will do a pro-rated match, based on the number of unique donors. So if you reach out to a friend and ask them to donate (smallest donation $5.00) it will accrue matching funds for us. Please support your library by making a gift to The Great Give at https://www.thegreatgive.org/organizations/institute-library -- and don't forget that you can support the specific fundraising efforts of your favorite Library people by finding their peer-to-peer fundraising pages. To add some fun to the mixthe Gallery Upstairs will have its show closing event on May 3rd, from 5:00 – 7:00, and then we’ll walk over one block to Café Nine to end the evening with a party. Our wonderful Eva be there with a laptop so that you can party and donate at the same time. Party details below!

Our neighbor, the English Market, is welcoming back the New Haven Theater Company for its next production, and we'd like to join the welcome wagon. Library members are being offered a 10% discount on tickets to this production of White, Rabbit, Red Rabbit by Nassim Soleimanpour -- come downtown for a night out!

See you in May!

An Important Note about Driving on Chapel Street:

Be Aware of Construction Starting Soon!

Beginning April 16th, the east bound side of Chapel Street (across from the Library) will be closed to traffic for the next 12-15 months. Traffic will be detoured around the block (along Church Street to Elm to Orange to Chapel). This is for the two residential and street level retail buildings currently under construction. The west bound side of Chapel will remain open. The building on the corner of Orange and Chapel will be done early 2024, the building across from the Library will be finished in the summer of 2024.

Regardless: We are open! There are many parking garages, including two on State Street, one and a half blocks from the library. Please call us if you have any concerns.

Local Luminary Hank Paper visits the Institute Library Saturday, May 6, 2023

from 4:00-6:00

Paper's new book,

My Search for Meaning,

The Myron Stories

is a collection of comic short stories.

Whether fighting an interloping bear in his basement, leading his irascible grandmother on a hair-raising tour of Old Jerusalem, or dreaming of alien body snatchers who may or may not be real, Hank Paper’s new book, My Search for Meaning, The Myron Stories, confronts the unexpected contingencies of life with humor, pathos, and, yes, even some speculative meanings for the reader.

Come hear more about Myron’s adventures at a Book Launch & Reading event on Saturday, May 6th. Paper will be reading some of his favorite stories, signing books, and charming the audience with his wit and good humor.

This event is free and open to all. Light refreshments will be served.

Story Sharing @

the Institute Library

May 11, 2023

7:00-9:00 p.m.

We meet in-person only, on the second Thursday of every month,

from 7:00-9:00 P.M.

We will have a Zoom-only meeting from 7:00-9:00 P.M.

on the third Thursday of

every OTHER month,

beginning in May.

This makes for twelve in-person and six Zoom meetings per year.

Anyone may join at any time; no experience is required. People share stories at any

stage of development; from maybe-this-is-a-story first tries to polished pieces. The

stories may be about personal experiences, folk tales, or any other genre. Those who

wish it get feedback from the group. People may also come just to listen.

The meetings are very informal, friendly, and fun.

Sew Sew Social: The Sewing Bee at the Institute Library

Sew Sew Social is on hiatus. We hope to return soon and would appreciate any feedback about the program. Email Eva Geertz, our Operations Manager, with your suggestions or plaintive cries…

Back at the circulation desk...

Once we party our way through the Great Give, we should all start thinking about unwinding with potato-chippy summer reading. I know some of you will be ambitious and go for Dostoevsky but personally I will dive into the light fiction I've been meaning to read for months but haven't gotten around to. Bestselling novel Lessons in Chemistry is calling my name*. Also This is What It Sounds Like, a book about why we like the music we like. And Rebecca Makkai's I Have Some Questions For You might be on my list too...

Was there something you had in mind to get your hands on that I might not have thought to order? Don't be afraid to ask us about specific books. I'll do what I can to get what I can, and fast.
