Light and Shadow

The Three Rivers Public Library is hosting a three-part "Leap into Science" series for 6-12 year old children. Our students have learned about light and shadow in the first lesson and wind in the second lesson. The third part of the series is about balance.

Visiting the Post Office

TRAM students learned that MLK used letter writing as a way to change our world for the better. They followed his example by writing letters themselves.

They also learned how to properly format letters and address envelopes.

The lesson culminated in a trip to the post office where they mailed their letters and got a VIP tour.

Outdoor Winter Activities

Cold weather and snow doesn't stop TRAM students from getting exercise and having fun. We're from Michigan!

This last batch of snow resulted in a snowbank next to our building perfect for climbing and sliding.

Meet Our Mentors: Amelia Henningsen

Amelia helping her mentee plant tomatoes at the Huss Project.

Amelia Henningsen has been a mentor for TRAM since we reopened our doors in January 2022. Her mentee has remained in our program this year, so Amelia has been able to stay with her for two years of school (and counting). I asked Amelia a few questions so you can get to know her better.

1. What are you doing right now? (Who do you work for? What's your position?)

I work at Armstrong International in Three Rivers. I do marketing and communication work for the Hot Water Group, and I love it there!

2. What made you consider mentoring with TRAM?

I grew up in Three Rivers and graduated from TRHS. Community involvement was a big part of my childhood - my dad was a city commissioner and my mom was really involved in our church. They both instilled in me the importance of sharing my time and talent with my community. In the past, I've worked as both a camp counselor and a substitute teacher and had great experiences, so when I learned about TRAM, that seemed like a great way to use my skill set to give back to a community that has given so much to me.

3. What are your favorite activities to do with your mentee?

My mentee and I both enjoy board games. We usually play at least one every week. My favorite is Sorry!, but we like to switch it up. She beats me in the Memory games almost every time - she's a pro! We also enjoy drawing and doing crafts together.

4. Do you have a mentoring memory you would like to share?

Last spring, my mentee and I worked together on a sunny day to plant some tomatoes at the Huss Project. That was a really fun project, and it was great to check on the plants together and watch them grow over the last few weeks of the school year!

Thank you, Amelia, for being such a dedicated and loving mentor! We will continue our "Meet Our Mentors" series in the March newsletter. Do you have an hour a week to devote to changing a young person's life? We have several students who would love to meet you! Email TRAM@Frontier.com for more information.

Join Us In Our Exciting New Pilot Program

Job Preparedness Program

In 2023, TRAM is piloting a new job preparedness program where we teach young people in grades 9-12 how to write resumes and prepare for interviews. We then match them up with participating employers in Three Rivers. Our program includes mentoring during employment.

We are currently seeking both employers and students who would like to participate in the pilot program.

Resume-building and interview preparation classes will begin in September. Sign up today!
