MHLS Announcements

We are by no means finished sharing information with you about the new catalog, Discover! For the next few weeks, you can expect updates letting you know what is happening with the catalog including tips and tricks to share with colleagues and patrons.

Member library staff questions about Discover should be directed to Laurie Shedrick, MHLS Assistant Director & Technology Operations Manager.

MHLS will be closed on January 1st in observance of New Year’s Day. There will be no deliveries and the MHLS ticket system will not be monitored.

MHLS Libraries

The following was submitted by Hollie Ferrara (She/Her) Children’s and Teen Programmer at the Woodstock Library. Hollie was one of the recipients of the 2023 New York Library Association (NYLA) Conference Scholarship from the Mid-Hudson Library System (MHLS).

I was a lucky recipient of a scholarship to attend this year’s NYLA Conference in Saratoga. This was a quality event all the way around and I found the Conference app to be most helpful. It was a hard decision on what presentations to attend, with so many choice offerings, but as I am new to my position in Youth Services, I focused on the outstandingly informative sessions on Family Programming, Teens and Summer Reading. The experiences shared and programming ideas and tips I gathered are sure to enrich and polish next year’s schedule. On a personal note, it was validating for me to hear about programs that people had in mind to do in future that I had already done. Moreover, Saratoga is a beautiful location with much to see and do and I am grateful to have been given the opportunity to visit.

The NYLA Conference Scholarship from MHLS helps provide new library directors and new library staff with the opportunity to attend the annual NYLA Conference by matching funds provided by the library to underwrite conference attendance.

Resource Sharing & Sierra

REMINDER: On the first of the year (January 1st) all totals in the Year-to-Date Circulation (YTD) will be moved to Last Year Circ (LYR), replacing the numbers stored there from the previous year.

Sustainable Libraries

United Way of the Dutchess-Orange Region is challenging you to a 21-Day Equity Challenge that will share resources about specific equity topics in our community for each day of the challenge. You can choose to read an article, watch a video or listen to a podcast - or delve more deeply into the topic by engaging with all three. Depending on your choice, each challenge will take from a few minutes up to an hour daily.

The 21-Day Equity Challenge begins on Monday, January 15th, Martin Luther King Jr. Day and is open to anyone in the Hudson Valley. This is a powerful opportunity to develop a deeper understanding of how inequality affects our lives and our community. To sign up, go to www.uwdor.org/mlk24.

Programming

Join the best competitive reading competition in the Mid-Hudson Valley! If you are a MHLS member library, you are eligible to join the Battle of the Books! Create a team for the Middle School Competition (grades 4-8) and/or the High School Competition (grades 8-12). Each team will read the same books, then everyone will meet at the end of the summer for a big trivia contest based on questions from those books. The next meeting will be on Tuesday, January 9, at 12:00 pm at the Saugerties Public Library to select the books for the 2024 competitions. For more information or to sign-up, please email Jane Enkler (jenkler@beekmanlibrary.org) or Christine Pacuk (cpacuk@saugertiespubliclibrary.org).

Administration & Management

MHLS will be asked to authenticate if your library is in compliance with New York State Minimum Standards. Please review your compliance in advance of the Annual Report to the State in January-February. This includes ensuring all required info is posted to your website.

So, what happens if you are unable to comply with one or more of the minimum standards by the deadline for your annual report to the state in February? You will go through what is called the "variance process." This requires a form to be filled out to explain which standards you didn't meet, a meeting with MHLS staff to determine a compliance path, and approval of that compliance path by the MHLS Board and the Division of Library Development. You would usually have 12-18 months to come into compliance.

If you have questions about your library’s compliance with minimum standards, please contact Laura Crisci, MHLS Library Sustainability Coordinator.
