Ministry Update

Pastor Casey

New Lifers,

I’m sometimes asked an important ministry update question: “Pastor, when are we bringing back the 8 am service at the park?”

Let me first tell you the answer and then tell you the reasoning behind the answer. After careful consideration, our Leadership Team has agreed not to resume the 8 am service this spring. Instead, we’ll research if, why, and how to potentially resume an 8 am service in the fall.

I know that will disappoint some of our worshipers, so let me explain our thinking. Personally, I have no problem adding another service to my own Sunday morning. It’s one more chance to preach the gospel and lead people into God’s presence! Another worship service can often be an opportunity for a church to reach more people simply by giving people more possible times to choose from.

But as your Leadership Team (our church board) weighed this, we realized that there are other factors to consider. First, there are other staff and volunteers needed to staff another service. This is a planning and logistics issue. Second, we need to determine why to add another service. Some like the time but others have enjoyed the location at the park. Some like the park because of the (sometimes) pleasant environment, while others see it as an outreach opportunity to those outside the church. If we host a service on the church campus, we’ll also have to consider parking. Finally, we need to account for all the additional resources we might need for another service, which depends on staff/volunteers and location (see above).

If the steady attendance and growth we’ve seen this first quarter of 2025 continue into the fall, we’ll absolutely have to consider another worship service - which is a great problem to have! Our 9:15 service has been full most Sundays this year. Praise God!

By the way, here’s our average worship attendance so far this year. We’ve averaged 223 during our 9:15 service and 267 at our 10:45 service, for a total average of 490 on Sunday mornings. Our total average during the same period of 2024 was 513. That’s pretty consistent with our worship attendance the last two years, however, we had major disruptions to our worship patterns last fall thanks to the hurricanes.

If you’ve been an 8 am worshiper, or someone sitting a little closer to others at 9:15 am, THANK YOU for your patience and understanding. If you’ve got helpful feedback that might help us as we decide our worship options, please let me or one of our Leadership Team members know. I’m grateful to worship with each of you every Sunday!

Intentional Christian Grandparenting Small Group

A big thank you to the special presentations given to the Intentional Christian Grandparenting group! Elise Gowan presented how to guide a child to the saving knowledge of Jesus Christ. Elise Gowan and Ruth Brewer work extensively with elementary age children in “Good News Club” at Sallie Jones Elementary. Cody Workman, our Young Life staff member for Charlotte High School and Punta Gorda Middle School, spoke about leading teens to Christ as well as his own special relationship with his grandmother who was very influential in his spiritual life. Tim Buck, our New Life Director of Youth Ministries, also spoke about leading teens to Christ and gave a wonderful object lesson using a ladder to illustrate his presentation. We greatly enjoyed their presentations to the Intentional Christian Grandparenting small group. Thank you to all involved…participants and speakers!

Scholarship Committee Birthday Box

The Scholarship Committee would like to remind our Bridge readers about an opportunity to contribute to the higher education scholarship fund for our future recipients. The program is called the Birthday Box. During the month of your birthday, we are asking you to consider donating one dollar to the “Birthday Box” for every year old you are. For example, if you are 50 years old, you would donate $50. If you desire to financially support this program, you can drop off your donation to the Birthday Box located in the Life Center foyer or the vestibule in the Sanctuary. Donation envelopes are available on the side of the Birthday Box for your convenience to use for cash donations, or you can just drop in your check. May you have a happy birthday by donating a blessing to a future recipient!

A Word from Worship

Greetings New Life Family and Friends,

I have some confessions to make! As you probably know, I've had a rough few months. Not an excuse but circumstances over which I had no control. About one year ago Don was diagnosed with stage 4 cancer and began treatment; then I was told I had a cancerous lesion in my lung and had radiation. To describe life as a little chaotic would be mild. During all this, I learned that I had to stay strong in my prayer life. And I will admit that it was very easy to get distracted. This Lenten season I am so grateful for Pastor Casey's Bible studies, his Sunday messages, and the wonderful daily devotions. I have really been trying to feel to some degree the chaotic journey that Jesus was on. Luke 9:51 says "As the time approached for him to be taken up to heaven, Jesus resolutely set out for Jerusalem." I realize distraction is something we all deal with. We're determined to follow through and read our Bible for an extra 30 minutes or not eat candy or any of the numerous things we pledge ourselves to do. And then things come along like appointments, unplanned shopping needs, or not enough sleep and it's easy to miss a day. I believe we all deal with things that distract us on occasion. But when the time came for Jesus to begin His journey to the cross, He didn't allow any distractions to stop Him. Even when Peter tried to chastise Jesus for talking of His death Jesus said "Get behind me, Satan".  It's made me think how it's easy to be faithful when things are easy but how easy is to get off track when things get tough or just get busy. My prayer this Lent is to let go of anything that's not leading me to the cross and hope that it holds. I read this prayer each day:

Lead me to Your cross, Lord. Teach me to recognize and set aside those things that serve only to distract me from You.

A quick update; I am so grateful for your prayers. You may have noticed that I wasn't on campus for a while during the past couple of weeks. I came down with the flu, got better in a few days, and then unfortunately became extremely sick with pneumonia. Thanks to your prayers I was able to battle this at home, rather than the hospital but it was lengthy and difficult. But I'm thankful to report that I'm doing much better; just need to get my strength back. I have missed everyone and am happy to get back. I am a perfect example of the power of prayer and I hope to share that with everyone.

Please contact me if you can help with greeting on Sunday; especially on Easter Sunday. It's easy to do and the blessings are beautiful! There are a lot of folks still coughing and sick so please pray for them.

I'm praying for you!
