Hunter's Creek Middle School Community Brief Monday, December 4, 2023

Dear Mark,

It is hard to believe that we are now down to only three full weeks of school left in 2023. The end of the first semester on Friday, December 22 will mark completion of half of this academic year - 2023-2024 OCPS Calendar.

Students will be completing a number of school-wide assessments before the Winter Break. These tests are very important in order to gauge the progress of our students and help them achieve better results on additional testing at the end of the year. It is imperative that our eagles attend school and arrive on time during testing days. The testing calendar is as follows:

FAST ELA 2- 12/12 (modified bell schedule)

FAST Math 2- 12/14 (modified bell schedule)

During the Week of December 18th, we will follow regular bell schedules for the STAR Algebra and Geometry testing, and the Science and Civics PMA testing. On Tuesday, December 19th, Physical Education students will take the PE Common Final Exam (CFE) following a modified bell schedule. Please help us make sure that our Eagles are ready to do their very best on these exams.

We are excited to host Board Member Alicia Farrant tomorrow, Monday, 12/4, at 6:00pm in the HCMS Cafeteria for a 100% Design/Construction Kickoff Community Meeting. Please join us!

In this edition of The Eagles' View you will find important information regarding recognitions for our Students of the Week, Top Readers, Band and Art students as well as upcoming Winter Music Concerts and scheduled Holiday Spirit events.

Enjoy your week and this beautiful weather!

In Eagle Pride,

Joumana Moukaddam

Proud Principal

Volleyball Season Update

Both Volleyball teams qualified for the post-season! HCMS boys’ team travels to play Southwest MS on Monday, Dec. 4 at 6pm; HCMS girls’ volleyball team travels to play Timber Springs on Monday, Dec. 4 at 7pm.

Wednesday, November 8th

The HCMS volleyballers continued their winning ways on Wednesday evening, with both squads beating the Meadow Woods Stallions in two games apiece. Undefeated boys volleyball coach, Nick Onderick, has his charges motivated and ready for a first place deciding game next Wednesday, Nov. 15 against the similarly unbeaten Walker boys team. But first, the Eagles had to get by Meadow Woods – and that they did, winning 25-14, 25-14. Coach Onderick (with his parents in attendance) mentioned the fine all-around play of two of his 8th graders, Diego Salazar (setting and serving) and Aaron Graham (hitting).

The Lady Eagles’ match was a tale of two games, the first with the ending not decided until very late (25-17), and the other decided very early in the contest (25-2). 7th grade leader Stefanny Rodriguez was superb at the service line in both games. Eighth grader Yasirah Poynter played her best game of the season, with multiple kills from the left side of the net. Coach Kim Durgin’s girls elevated their record to 4-1 and currently stand in second place in the South Cluster.

Thanks as always to Amy Pratt and Anthony D’orsa for running our home volleyball games at the scorer’s table.

Go Eagles!

Wednesday, November 15th

Both HCMS volleyball squads made the playoffs with 5-1 records, and will represent the South Cluster in the upcoming playoffs as the second place teams. Finishing first were the Walker boys (6-0), and the Lake Nona girls (6-0). Third place for the girls was Innovation (4-2), and there is a 3-way tie for the boys (3-3) of Freedom/Lake Nona/Innovation, the tie-breaker to be decided after the break.

Coaches Nick Onderick and Kim Durgin led their teams to strong regular seasons, with the boys winning five in a row at one point, and the girls losing only once – to the powerhouse Lady Knights from LNMS. Wednesday evening saw two undefeated boys teams face each other, as the Walker Vikings came to HCMS for the final games before the championships. The HCMS boys lost 25-16, 25-14. The team played Walker tough in both games, staying even with the Vikings for most of each game, only to have their opponent pull away at the end.

The Lady Eagles struggled a bit in the first game, allowing a soon to be 2-4 Lady Vikings team to stay in it until the end (25-19). But, the HCMS girls played a much stronger second game, winning 25-9. Congrats to both coaches (along with Kim Durgin’s “assistants” Skander Khazar, Nayomi Calderon, and Ginny Calderon) and wish them luck in the playoffs.

Thanks again to Amy Pratt and Anthony D’orsa for helping out at all of our home games – you’re the best!

Go Eagles!
