Tuesday February 8, 1:00 - 1:30 pm

Presentation from the Rotary Club of Northbrook (Meeting, Every Tuesday 12:15 PM Central Time)

Tom Rosenstiel, author of eleven books and reporter for many years at the LA Times and Newsweek, began writing novels about political intrigue. His newest book, The Days To Come, is about the attempts of an iconoclastic Silicon Valley entrepreneur to treat the government like a disrupted industry and start over. Tom will talk about how he does research for his political thrillers and how that research is different than what he did as a journalist. How does one go about writing a thriller? Hear about how to write villains, and which are more fun, bad guys or good guys, as well as why journalists don't make good heroes in political thrillers.

"The story is bigger than the crime, and the crime is bigger than its solution, making Lippman's skill as a mystery novelist work as icing on the cake. The racism, classism, and sexism of 50 years ago wrapped up in a stylish, sexy, suspenseful period drama..."
-- Kirkus Reviews (starred review)

Our discussion of The Lady in the Lake by Laura Lippman, will be lead by Alli Gilley & Ron Oberman. We'd appreciate if those of you planning to attend would call or email us with your RSVP.

Detective Ron and Detective Alli are excited to get to the heart of this mystery with you as our partners! As with our Adult Book Discussion, there will not be a Zoom option this year.

January and February Book Reviews
The Paris Bookseller by Kerri Maher (Berkley)

In this incredible work of historical fiction by Kerri Maher, we learn of the beginnings of the famed bookstore Shakespeare & Company in Paris and of Sylvia Beach, the woman behind its founding.  The Paris Bookseller is beautifully told and illuminates the story of what it took to get the store opened as well as the pivotal role Ms. Beach played in the publication of James Joyce's Ulysses. Who could not enjoy reading a book where Gertrude Stein, T.S. Eliot, Ernest Hemingway and Ezra Pound are main characters? Maher invites us to join Sylvia through the joys and triumphs of her life as well as the deep disappointments and challenges of opening this fabulous bookstore. Bookstore lovers will adore this story! Take a step back from some of the heavy topics you are reading about and walk the streets of Paris with us in this delightful story. Look to The Paris Bookseller to be enlightening and a purely enjoyable read.

The Good Son by Jacquelyn Mitchard (Mira Books)

In The Good Son by Jacqueline Mitchard, Thea's son, imprisoned for the murder of his girlfriend, is released after serving his sentence. This intriguing novel not only asks difficult moral questions of us all, but also delivers a hold-your-breath, page-turning, constantly-in-danger story.  As a parent, my heart was breaking in so many ways. How do you help your child assimilate? How do you move on? Can you? What if the community is fighting against your son's very presence? What right does he have to a normal life after serving his time? These questions and this novel have stuck with me for weeks after finishing and have left me wanting to talk it over with friends, colleagues and customers alike!

To Paradise by Hanya Yanagihara (Doubleday)

To Paradise is a fascinating read. The story takes place in different versions of New York, each 100 years apart - 1893, 1993, and 2093. The names of the characters are the same in each section, yet their roles and circumstances are different. In each of the stories, one character has to decide how much he is willing to sacrifice to find "paradise". The book is exciting, perplexing, frightening and a true page turner. You will be discussing To Paradise for a long time.

Love & Saffron by Kim Fay (G.P. Putnam's Sons)
Release date February 8

We haven't received an early edition of this book, but we wanted to feature it since it is the #1 book selected for the February 2022 IndieNext list. Ms. Fay is a culinary travel writer who has "crafted a delectable 2nd novel" about what we all know: food can bring people together. It's 1962, and Joan, an unmarried 27-year-old from LA, sends a fan letter to Mrs. Imogen Fortier, author of a magazine column on Pacific Northwest island life. To thank her for her column, Joan shares her favorite recipe for mussels and encloses a saffron packet. The letters between these 2 women begin a friendship that opens them up to new possibilities, including sparking and rekindling loves for each of them. And you never know; this book may inspire you to "embark" on your own culinary adventures!
