Burning of Ashes
Adding to the worship experience at St John's on Sunday, this Sunday, the last Sunday before Lent we will burn ashes from palms distributed on Palm Sunday of last year. The ashes will be crushed to become suitable for the liturgy of the imposition on Ash Wednesday. Join us for the last act of Sunday's worship service.

COVID Safety Update from the Diocese of Ottawa:
“Winter is here, people are indoors more, and COVID infections are on the rise. Throughout the pandemic, our response to the reality of the virus has been science-based and in line with public health, and this latest challenge must be met the same way. Effective Sunday, October 30th, all liturgical leaders — including clergy, choirs, servers, chalice bearers, readers, intercessors, and sidespeople/greeters — must wear a mask before, during and after services except when speaking into a microphone, eating or drinking.”

Josh is undertaking research as part of his doctoral program at St John’s and is looking for volunteers to participate in interviews. His research explores the way in which the congregation understands worship and its relationship to reconciliation with Indigenous peoples. He will be studying this question by observing worship and interviewing members of the congregation. Interviews are expected to last approximately 60 minutes. All data collected during the process will be kept confidential and will remain anonymous. To volunteer to be interviewed, please contact Josh at jzent029@uottawa.ca or 613.816.1695, or speak to him in person.
PWRDF Ash Wednesday Soup-Supper Event
Mark your calendars!
We are going “live” with our PWRDF Ash Wednesday event.
| |
A reminder to join us on Wednesday, Feb. 22nd at 5:30 p.m. in the Parish Hall to sample delicious soups made by our parishioners, followed by a program on PWRDF. This year Bart Dickinson, PWRDF’s Planning, Monitoring and Evaluation Coordinator, will be joining us as our guest speaker. Bart will speak about PWRDF’s work around the world after a short video on our work in Ukraine moderated by Patricia Maruschak. Patricia is Ukrainian and served as the former Director of Partnerships and Programs for PWRDF.
We welcome contributions of soup, bread/rolls and butter. Please add your name to the sign-up sheet located both on a table at the back of the church and on the bulletin board in the back hallway across. All are welcome; there is no cost. This is a great opportunity to get to know other parishioners, enjoy a tasty soup and learn more about the important work which The Primate’s World Relief & Development Fund is carrying out.
The Ash Wednesday Soup-Supper is PWRDF’s major fundraiser during the year. We welcome your contributions to PWRDF at the event. The Ash Wednesday service will follow in the church at 7:30 p.m.
Contact Jane Maxwell at jane.maxwell@sympatico.ca should you have any questions.

Parishioners who have been around for a while will remember a St John’s tradition of holding a supper on Maundy Thursday. Gary, the Wardens and Parish Council are excited by the idea of reviving the supper this year as a community-building event, with the difference that it would not include the recreation of a Passover Seder. Most of the people who have organized the supper in the past are not available this year, so to do this, we will need one or two people to work with Michelle Smulders, our Deputy Rector’s Warden, to pull it all together. Maundy Thursday is on April 6 this year. Would you like to help make this happen? If so, please contact Michelle.
Our thoughts and prayers are with Maura and family during this time of loss.
Congratulations to Karen and Lionel Marks on the birth of their son Darien Marks on Wednesday, February 15th. Another singer for the choir and a brother for Magnus :)
The flowers are given to the glory of God and in loving memory of Marietta and Hans Stenman by Lannie Mitchell and Gay Richardson.
