Kings Athletics Inducts Five Into the Hall of Fame

The Kings Athletic Department and the Kings Athletic Booster Club

welcomed five new members to the Kings Athletic Hall of Fame on Saturday, February 1 in a ceremony with friends and family at TPC River’s Bend.

Congratulations to Blake Bockrath (football & track 2016), Hunter Jessee (baseball & Football 2019), Patrice DiPasquale (soccer 205), Emilee Slowik Cunningham (track 2008), and former Kings Dance Coach, Deborah Smith.

Kings Athletic Director Eric Taylor stated, “This year’s class represents the best of Kings High School. Not only were they phenomenal on the athletic field of play, they were role models for our community and our current student-athletes. They are the epitome of a student-athlete and

they will forever be enshrined in our Hall of Fame. It was an honor to give them the recognition they deserve.”

KHS Student American Heart Association Ambassador

Kings High School junior, Lucy Ajebe, was nominated by her teacher, Katie Endress, for the American Heart Association's Teen of Impact campaign this year. Lucy's goal is to help educate the Kings community and women everywhere about the importance of heart health. Knowing that women are at a higher risk for heart-related diseases drives her to spread awareness. Lucy's personal connection to this cause runs even deeper.

"I have a cousin who suffered a cardiac arrest and received life-saving CPR. This experience has further fueled my commitment to raising awareness and supporting this cause. By raising funds for the American Heart Association and educating others, I hope to inspire healthier choices and create lasting change in the lives of many. Heart disease can affect anyone, but together, we can help change that," she said.

There are only five teen nominees in the greater Cincinnati area and only one hundred twenty-nine students competing across the United States. On Friday, February 7, Lucy was honored at the National Women Wear Red kickoff party at Factory 52 in Norwood where she had the opportunity to speak to the many attendees about why heart health is so important to her.

Now, Lucy and her team, who accompanied her at the kickoff, are in the midst of a 9-week fundraising campaign to raise money for the American Heart Association. Help Lucy reach her fundraising goal! Every donation helps no matter how big or small. If you have had someone close to you affected by heart health, consider donating. Business Sponsorships can be a driving force in this campaign.

Contact kendress@kingslocal.net for any questions on business sponsor matching and marketing opportunities with the campaign.

Let's rally around Lucy and show the nation what the Kings community can do!

The Great Kindness Challenge

Our elementary schools recently celebrated Kindness Week. Each building had a school-wide spirit week with themed days such as Pajama Day, Kings Spiritwear Day, Hat Day, Wacky Sock Day, and more.

Each day they were intentional about spreading kindness. At J.F. Burns Elementary they focused on being kind friends, spreading kindness through words and actions, and expressing gratitude. At South Lebanon Elementary, they took their kindness a step further and hosted a Mac n Cheese Cup drive for Joshua's Place. They also passed out donuts and cards to their bus drivers. At Kings Mills Elementary, Mrs. Stronsider’s 3rd-grade class wrote thoughtful notes of gratitude and encouragement for staff, which they hung outside their classrooms. KME School Counselor, Keri Perdrix said, "These small but meaningful actions help create a culture of kindness at KME!"

KECC Preschool Students Get Special Guest Reader

Last week, the preschoolers in Mrs. Theresa Frazier's class at the Kings Early Childhood Center had a special guest reader. Mrs. Keri Perdrix, school counselor at Kings Mills Elementary, and her therapy dog, Gily visited to read a book and spread smiles.

The class just finished their month-long animal unit and shared their pet photos from home. Mrs. Perdrix read "The Perfect Dog" by Kevin O'Malley and explained that making students smile is Gily's job. Mrs. Frazier said, "Mission accomplished!"

KHS Internship Students

Three Kings High School students began their internships at SHP Leading Design Architecture firm.

KHS seniors, Gavin Eason, Owen Turner, and George Webb will spend 8-10 hours per week at SHP's Cincinnati office until the end of the school year. They all recently spent time at the office for onboarding.

SHP is the architecture firm that is designing the CIS addition and the new Kings High School building. Thank you to SHP for partnering with KHS to give our students meaningful experiences in the architecture field.

If you are a local business and are interested in hosting internship students, please contact Carrie Snyder at csnyder@kingslocal.net.

KHS Opportunities & Academic Fair

There is a great opportunity for all students next week at Kings High School. They will be hosting an Opportunities and Academic Fair on Thursday, February 13 from 6:00 - 7:30 p.m. in the KHS Gym.

Representatives from various local colleges and agencies will be there to provide information about colleges, transition and disability services, the military, and adult service providers. This is a good time to obtain information to support your student’s future plans.

Hope to see you there!

National School Counseling Week

This week we celebrate National School Counseling Week. National School Counseling Week focuses public attention on the unique contribution of school counselors within U.S. school systems. the week, sponsored by American School Counselor Association, highlights the tremendous impact school counselors can have in helping students achieve school success and plan for a career.

National School Counseling Week is always celebrated the first full week in February. As families know, our school counselors can have a tremendous impact on our schools, helping students achieve and plan for a life and career beyond high school.

From our youngest learners to graduating seniors, our Kings school counselors and therapists work with all students to remove barriers to learning by addressing academic concerns, exploring career options, and helping students build social and emotional skills over their years at Kings. Counselors provide much-needed resources and support for students' families, teachers, and administrators, too.

Many thanks to Kim Sellers, Heidi Murray, Alex Garvin, Chris Griffin, Erika Volker, Kelly Saleeba, Lanie Wissell, Megan Apple, Erin Hackman, Bekah Issacs, Dave Winebrenner, Keri Perdrix, Emily Sander, and Angela Cowles. Let's not forget our awesome Therapy Dogs, Gily, Raven, and Ollie!

Illnesses on the Rise

Our school nurses are seeing a high number of illnesses in school such as strep, flu, Covid, and stomach viruses. We are asking parents to carefully monitor their child's symptoms to help alleviate the spread of the virus within the school.

If your child has a fever, we request that no child return to school until their fever has returned to normal for a minimum of 24 hours without the use of fever-lowering medications.

To combat the further spread of flu in the school, we are asking you to keep sick children at home. Any child who displays flu-like symptoms will be sent home.

  • High Fever
  • Runny or stuffy nose/
  • cough
  • Headache
  • Extreme tiredness
  • Body ache
  • Sore throat

How is the flu spread?

The flu spreads in respiratory droplets from coughing and sneezing. It is spread from person to person, though they may become infected from touching an infected surface, and then touching their mouth or nose.

Look for Emergency Warning Signs

These are some “emergency warning signs” that require urgent medical attention.

  • Fast breathing or trouble breathing
  • Not drinking enough fluids, not urinating enough.
  • Not waking up or very lethargic
  • Being so irritable that the child does not want to be held
  • Fever with a rash

If you have any further questions or concerns, please contact your healthcare provider or speak to the nurse at your child’s school.

Kings Theatre Receives Donation

Kings Stagelighters received another generous donation for the Kings Theatre Program from the Daumeyer family.

For the tenth year in a row, the Daumeyer family has donated to the Kaylyn Daumeyer Scholarship which is given to a senior who participates in theatre at Kings.

The scholarship was created in memory of their daughter, Kaylyn, a Kings student who passed away in 2015 at the age of 13 and had a love for theatre.

At last weekend's Kings Junior High production of Alice in Wonderland Jr, the family presented Kings Theatre Director, Scott Hayward with a check for $1,000 to fund this year's scholarship.

The Daumeyers have donated $16,500 to Kings Theatre over the years.
