Summer Classes for Kids at Raven Hill

Nelson Mandela said, “Education is the most powerful weapon, which you can use to change the world.” That being said, Raven Hill is excited to announce a return to past years with Summer Classes for Kids. Classes will replace Discovery Camps, allowing staff and volunteers to teach and participating kids to focus on a specific subject area, like Science Magic, Pioneer Living or Fiber Arts. Of course, there will be some time at the beginning and end of each class to see the animals and play in the Discovery Room, but the majority of each session will focus on a given area of study.

Classes will be informal and active. Three different classes—one each of science, history and art—will be taught in the morning and a different three sessions will be scheduled for the afternoon. Kids can attend morning classes, afternoon classes or both. They will choose their focus and explore a variety of hands-on lessons on a particular topic over the course of four days—Monday through Thursday. There must be a minimum of five (5) registrations per class or that class will be canceled. However, with parent approval of a session change, classes may be merged to reach the minimum number. Those choosing to take morning and afternoon classes, may bring their lunches and stay for a half hour supervised break. Suggested ages are 5 to 14 and activities will be age-appropriate for those signed up in a class. Call 231.536.3369 or email info@miravenhill.org for more information or if you have any questions. A flyer is attached to this email with a list of classes and a registration form. This is the summer to learn, create, grow and play during Raven Hill’s Summer Classes for Kids.

Pet of The Week - Jade!

This gorgeous girl is Jade, obviously she is very pretty but she is smart too!

Jade came to us a stray shortly after she had puppies. We believe Jade had a home before coming to us as she was very well mannered and seemed to be housebroken. Jade is a very laid back and tolerant girl who loves to go for walks and car rides. She seems to do very well with other dogs and doesn't seem to mind cats either. Jade is just an all around good girl and would be a great fit for most families. Stop by and meet this beauty, we know she won't disappoint!

People Fund Grant Applicant Letters of Interest Due April 1

The Great Lakes Energy People Fund is accepting letters of interest and grant applications from non-profit organizations throughout its service area for the spring grant cycle. Letters of interest are due by April 1. If the letter of interest is approved, the applicant can then submit a grant application by April 15. All letters and applications are accepted through an online grant application portal that can be found at gtlakes.com/people-fund.

Great Lakes Energy members support the People Fund by agreeing to have their bill rounded up to the nearest whole dollar amount. That extra change is then pooled with contributions from other People Fund participants and returned to the community through grants to non-profit, charitable organizations that provide humanitarian, educational, or community development services within the cooperative’s 26-county service area. Since 1999, the People Fund Program has awarded more than $4.2 million in grants to charitable and community organizations to help them better the lives of residents in local communities. The People Fund awarded more than $258,000 in grants in 2022.

Non-profit organizations that serve communities located in the Great Lakes Energy service area are eligible to apply. More information about the People Fund program, including organization and grant eligibility criteria, and lists of recent grant recipients, is available online at www.gtlakes.com/people-fund.

Letters of interest are due by April 1, with applications due by April 15. Another grant opportunity will be available in October 2023.

Regional Child Care Planning Grant Awarded to Networks Northwest

The Early Childhood Investment Corporation’s (ECIC) Child Care Innovation Fund has awarded Networks Northwest with a $150,000 grant aimed at expanding access to quality, affordable child care for working families in northwest Lower Michigan. Networks Northwest is one of 16 grant recipients throughout the state awarded funds to support a Regional Child Care Planning Coalition in order to understand the capacity and quality of the current child care system, the child care preferences of parents, and the needs of the business community. The Coalition will also determine barriers to increasing access, affordability, and quality along with strategizing for policy, funding and programs meant to overcome these barriers.

“Child care is the backbone of our economy”, said Governor Gretchen Whitmer. “Access to quality, affordable child care supports parents as they go back to work, ensures kids have the support they need to grow into their best selves, and helps businesses hire, recruit, and retain talent”.

The ECIC received $12.5 million in federal American Rescue Plan Act funding in August, awarded by the Michigan Department of Education as part of Caring for MI Future. The state is investing $100 million to dramatically increase access to child care across the state and open 1,000 new or expanded, child care programs by the end of 2024.

“Access to quality and affordable child care is vital to the economic well-being of a community”, said Jessica Willis, Chief Program Officer for Networks Northwest. “We recognize child care as critical infrastructure that enables workforce participation. This grant will support the convening of an inclusive regional network of partners to create the Northwest Regional Child Care Coalition. The Coalition will work to accelerate current initiatives and best practices, while identifying advocacy tools and strategies to support business growth.”

The Regional Child Care Planning grant runs through June 2024. For more information contact Jessica Willis at Jessica.willis@networksnorthwest.org
