AN UPDATE FROM SECRETARY SCHWAB

February 2025

Dear Kansan,

Thank you for your interest in receiving my monthly newsletter.

It is an honor to serve as your Kansas Secretary of State. If my office can be of any service to you, please do not hesitate to contact me at Scott.Schwab@ks.gov or 785-296-4575.

All my best,

Scott Schwab

Kansas Secretary of State

First Day of 2025 Legislative Session

On January 13, I had the privilege of gaveling in the Senate chamber and administering the Oath of Office to its members.

With that, the 2025 Legislative Session is officially underway with a number of new members in each chamber. I look forward to working with legislators this session to improve our state's regulatory process, protect businesses from scams, and to continue to enhance election security.

House Elections Testimony

I had the pleasure of testifying before the House Elections Committee and the Senate Committee on Federal and State Affairs, providing an overview of Kansas elections including federal and state laws, security measures in place, and my 2025 legislative agenda. I answered questions about statistics from last year's three elections, lessons learned from those elections, and our work with the Division of Motor Vehicles to ensure noncitizens are kept off the voter roll.

Information Report Due Date Change

Information reports are now filed biennially. Businesses forming in even years file reports in each succeeding even year. Businesses forming in odd years file reports in each succeeding odd year. All for-profit businesses are due by April 15th of their respective year, and all not-for-profit businesses are due by June 15th of their respective odd or even year.

NASS Winter Convention

I attended the National Association of Secretaries of State (NASS) winter conference in Washington D.C. last week. It was a pleasure seeing some old friends, new faces, and collaboratively discussing shared challenges and insights on the past election year. We also looked ahead to future initiatives to strengthen election systems and support our businesses services division.

As the conference's representative of Kansas, I also led a moment of silence for the victims of the deadly American Airlines crash in Washington D.C. on January 29th. May the Lord of Heaven bring peace and comfort to the families of all who perished in the incident above the Potomac.

“Blessed are those who mourn, for they shall be comforted.” (Mt. 5:4)

From the Vault

Staff from my office are spearheading a video series from the former vault of the Kansas Historical Society in Memorial Hall where our office is located. The series educates Kansans about the functions of the Secretary of State, ranging from the Business Services Division to conducting elections. And because it is coming from a vault that once protected state treasures, there may be a few nuggets of Kansas history sprinkled in the episodes.

Business One Stop

A game-changing tool created by the office is our Business One Stop tool for prospective or existing business owners. The online wizard helps centralize the business formation and permit processes. Several other agencies partnered with my office to make this tool a reality. To explore and use the one-stop, visit ksbiz.kansas.gov
