Oxford Development teeing up next Railroad Street apartment project as part of master plan second phase

Under its new top leadership, Oxford Development Co. is ready to return to unfinished business.

The Strip District-based developer and a partner, Steel Street Capital Partners, proposes to build a new 240-unit, six-story apartment building along Railroad Street between 26th and 27th Streets, a block-long site between the two established parking garages of Oxford's 3 Crossings master plan.

The project is on the agenda for the upcoming Pittsburgh Planning Commission meeting Nov. 22, including renderings based on a design by downtown-based LGA Partners to build the six-story structure for which the proposed 240 apartments is a little bigger than the 200-unit apartment project approved in the master plan for the second phase of 3 Crossings...Read More

A new Pitt project will offer a less tiresome route up ‘Cardiac Hill’

Living on Pitt’s upper campus means that hiking up De Soto Street — more commonly known as “Cardiac Hill” — is a regular activity for University of Pittsburgh student Matthew Lu.

“It’s horrible walking up that hill,” said Mr. Lu, a sophomore studying computer science.

Pitt students must trek up the steep street to reach the Petersen Events Center, Trees Hall Fitness Center and several dormitories such as Panther Hall, where Mr. Lu lives...Read More

Million-dollar townhouses coming to Mount Washington

Marty Gillespie has developed luxury townhouses at Bakery Square, in the Strip District, and other parts of the city. He’s now taking his work to new heights.

Laurel Communities, Mr. Gillespie’s company, is turning three empty tracts on Mount Washington’s Grandview Avenue into 27 luxury townhouses ranging in price from $1.3 million to $1.9 million.

Mr. Gillespie was drawn to the site by the same thing that brings hordes of others to Grandview — the gorgeous views of the Downtown skyline and rivers. And since the townhouses will feature rooftop terraces some 30 feet above ground, he figured it was a can’t-miss opportunity...Read More

Plan to replace Victorian house in Shadyside with apartment building rejected

The Pittsburgh Zoning Board of Adjustment has rejected a controversial proposal to tear down an old Victorian house in Shadyside and replace it with a six-unit apartment building.

In a Nov. 15 ruling, the board concluded that Shadyside Enterprises, the owner of the property at 6111 Walnut St., did not meet the requirements of the variance needed to construct the new building.

The decision is a victory for Shadyside residents who live close to the property and officials at the nearby Sacred Heart Elementary School, all of whom raised concerns about the project...Read More

Revised plan for Market Square keeps vehicular traffic, bans parking

A revised plan to revamp Downtown’s Market Square would permit traffic on one side while banning parking altogether in an effort to create more space for outdoor dining.

The Pittsburgh Downtown Partnership unveiled the proposal last week after Market Square merchants and others raised strong objections to an earlier plan that would have banned all vehicles from the square.

Jeremy Waldrup, the partnership’s president and CEO, said the latest concept was crafted in consultation with many of those merchants as well as business and property owners adjacent to the square...Read More
