Principal Note

Dear WCA Community,

Last week, we devoted a day to bullying awareness and prevention. Although our school uses a CASEL-approved anti-bullying curriculum year round, we felt the extra attention and focus on this important topic would be impactful to students. Kindergarten-Fourth grade students attended an assembly on the topic of being an Upstander. They read Say Something by Peggy Moss and learned four strategies to support peers when they witness unkindness. We encourage you to talk to your students about the strategies presented at the assembly:

1.) Be a Buddy- if you see someone who needs a friend, invite them to play

2.) Interrupt- change the topic

3.) Speak Out- say that the behavior you are seeing is not okay.

4.) Tell Someone- tell a trusted adult what is happening

Fifth-eighth grade students participated in six 20 minute rotations on bullying conducted by both internal staff and external speakers. Topics addressed with our older students include: Legal Implications, Cyber Bullying, Protected Classes, Social Emotional Impact of Bullying, Being an Upstander, and Strategies to Include Others. Students in the upper grades also watched a documentary on bullying.

Students who experience a sense of belonging at school have higher academic performance, self-confidence, and emotional well-being. Our goal is to continue to foster an environment where students feel valued and accepted. Thank you for belonging at WCA!

Respectfully,

Bethany Merkling

Principal
