President's Message
It’s May! Hard to believe that our ALL year is over already. We’ve had two semesters of great courses, learned to navigate hybrid learning, and have enjoyed being back “in school” for some in-person classes. Our social and special events were a success, and we will be planning new ones for the fall.

Although it’s time for gardening, graduations, and summer activities, the curriculum committee is hard at work, recruiting coordinators and scheduling our fall lineup of classes. Be sure to check your emails this summer for our “Staying Connected” emails and the course catalog which will be online in early August. While socializing with neighbors and friends, think about spreading the word about ALL or serving on a committee in the fall.

Our annual meeting will be held on Wednesday, May 17th at 10:30 in the Atrium of the Larousso Technology building. Officers and committee chairs will present their annual reports for the past ALL year. Please attend.

Have a wonderful spring and summer. Enjoy all the Cape has to offer this time of year – even the voracious bunnies!

See you in September!

ALL 2023 Spring Social
April 27, 2023
silverware_colors.jpg

On April 27th, 50 ALL members gathered at the Cape Codder Resort for our annual Spring Social. This is the last hurrah before the summer recess, and everyone had a good time feasting on the delicious appetizers and catching up with their ALL friends. Chris Clark, Vice President of Finance and Operations, at the College, spoke to the group about what was happening at the college, concerning enrollment, community outreach, and course and degree offerings. The evening was a great way to transition to summer.

Jim Coogan : "Stories From The Narrow Land"
April 18, 2023

On Tuesday, April 18, 2023, Jim Coogan presented a lecture on Cape Cod Stories in the Atrium at Cape Cod Community College. Jim is a retired history teacher and regular columnist for the Cape Cod Times daily newspaper. He plans to offer an ALL course in the fall of 2023. If you are interested, be sure to register early. A link to the video of his talk can be found at the end of the article.
Jim Coogan has had a connection to ALL for many years as a student and as a coordinator. He was raised in Brewster from the age of four and taught history there for about 30 years to high school students. He now lives in Sandwich with his wife Beth.

Jim has written a total of 13 books, "Cape Cod Passage" being the most recent one. He loves the stories of Cape Cod, the subject of which is limitless. While in elementary school, Jim rode his bike and would stop at the general store where he loved to listen to people while they talked and hear their stories from "all over the place".

Jim entertained us with stories about the Quakers; native Americans; clam diggers; President James Garfield; Henry Ellis, one of the top Cape lawyers in the 1930's; Charlie Bean; stories of Provincetown; and much more. Jim recommends that we look for historical events in the novel format since it appeals to the general reader. Thank you, Jim, for a delightful afternoon.

ALL's First Annual Poetry Slam
April 19, 2023

ALL celebrated National Poetry Month by sponsoring its first Poetry Slam on April 19, 2023. The event began at 5 P.M. at the Cape Media Center, 17 Shad Hole Road Dennisport. Future "poetry slams" are anticipated. This event was taped to go out on Channel 99, the ALL YouTube page, Web Site and FaceBook page. A link to the video of the event can be found at the end of this article
The Academy for Lifelong Learning recently celebrated National Poetry Month by producing a Poetry Slam at the Cape Media Center on April 19, 2023. Our own Lawrence Brown was the Master of Ceremonies to 12 of ALL’s talented poets. The poets read to a live audience while being taped for future viewing on YouTube, Channel 99, ALL’s FaceBook and webpages. Lawrence Brown, Glyn Dowden, Bill Holcombe, Walter Ralston, John Kennedy, June Calender, Diane Hanna, DJ Foley, Rona Robinson, Havana Moss, Diane Brooke, and Wayne Miller read their original poetry on topics from soap to aging. Their talent was stunning and left the audience requesting more events like this.

Our Broadcast Team of Joan Freedman, Jean DeVincentis and Marianne Triplette produced the event with assistance from Dianne Tattersall, Maggie French and Jennifer Bakewell, as well as the staff at Cape Media Center.
The pictures above show the studio stage being set up as poets and audience begin to arrive.
Please watch and listen to the Poetry Slam. Nothing makes the heart soar quite as much as poetry. The link to it is below:

Come Join the "Reflections" Editorial Team
"Reflections" is ALL's art and literary magazine. It is both for ALL members and by ALL members and features their creativity.
After more than a decade in the role of Reflections Editor, June Calender is planning to pass the "editorial torch" to someone else.

She has asked that the search for a new editor and team members be announced. She notes that "Many wonderful committee members have been enormously helpful, while being fun to work with; some will be willing to continue to contribute their skills and insights. "

The move from entirely print to both PDF and paper copy has been accomplished and the “print on demand publisher” connection will be passed on to the new team.

If you are interested in serving in this role, or in volunteering to be a part of the Reflections team, please contact the ALL office or June Calender.
