Dear M&I,
This week is Graduate Student Appreciation Week. While it is definitely odd to celebrate it against the backdrop of the GEO strike, I do hope the students in M&I know that they are valued and appreciated. There are a few surprises planned this week from the department, and I do hope students will visit the OGPS office for more “goodies”. Please do take a moment to let your students know you appreciate them!
I am so pleased to announce that Anukul Shenoy is officially here! He started Monday, April 3rd. Please welcome him warmly, and with his permission I am sharing this awesome photo of the Indian blessing ceremony that took place for his new house!
In more good news, we look forward to celebrating the PhD defense of Megan Procario on Thursday at 2 pm in Med Sci 1 5330. There will also be cake and coffee in the library at 5 pm. Please come congratulate Megan!
One more piece of good news. Congratulations are in order for Dr. Steve Gurczynski and his wife Ayish Menon. They are the proud parents of a new baby girl born last week. Congrats Steve! We can’t wait to see pictures!
As of April 5th, masks are no longer required in common areas in the hospital or hallways, only when providing direct patient care.
Finally, condolences to Michal Olszewski who is in Poland for the funeral services of his father who died late last year.
No one signed up for tea today, but the office will pull together some of our usual goodies and tea for the 3 pm gathering. We look forward to the Kirschner lab hosting next week!
Final report on our participation in Vital Voices Survey:
Faculty 64%
Staff 43%
Thank you to those who did fill out the survey. I'm sorry that we didn't reach our 80% target.
Bye and Happy April!
Beth

Silas Johnson returns to M&I to serve as the Program Manager for the Center for HIV RNA Studies. After graduating with a PhD in Microbiology and Immunology in 2012, Silas left the department to pursue a career in teaching undergraduate biology at primarily undergraduate institutions. Silas first taught biology at the United States Air Force Academy (CO) before joining the faculty at Hillsdale College (MI), where he served for seven years and achieved the rank of Associate Professor of Biology. The COVID-19 pandemic brought Silas back to research and from 2020-2022 he worked as a research faculty member in the Department of Microbiology and Molecular Genetics at Michigan State University. In his free time, Silas enjoys being outdoors, long-distance running, cooking, baking, and eating (usually in that order).
