Subdivision Resurfacing Scheduled
The Township′s 2023 subdivision resurfacing program is scheduled to occur between April 24th and May 26th. More specifically, the following subdivision streets will be resurfaced:
The Ottawa County Road Commission notes that the low bid for the Township’s 2023 Subdivision resurfacing program (including Engineering and Restoration) was $825,000. This is $138k (or 14.3%) below↓ the budget estimate.
Fire/Rescue Station - May 2nd Bond Election
Election Day, on May 2nd, includes a $12.36 million bond proposal for the construction of a Fire/Rescue Station.

Because the Township’s population has increased by over 43% since 2000 to about 19,000 and because the number of Fire/Rescue emergencies increased by about 88% to over 1,500 annually, the current Fire/Rescue facility needs to be expanded to accommodate the increased number of staff, emergency runs, and training needs.
Further, recent studies have proven that firefighters and medical responders are at increased↑ cancer risks and require personal decontamination facilities and isolated rooms for their personal protective equipment to be thoroughly cleaned and maintained after responding to an emergency. The current facility lacks facilities for our firefighters and paramedics to properly decontaminate after an emergency incident.
For more information on the proposed Fire/Rescue Station bond, the Township produced an educational whiteboard video and written FAQ that is posted on the Township’s website.

Please share the link with your friends and family. And, if you have any further questions, please contact Fire/Rescue Chief Shawn Schrader at sschrader@ght.org.
Community Choice Grant Project Completed
The Grand Haven Area Community Foundation – as part of their 50-Year Anniversary Celebration – provided a Community Choice Grant to the Township.

Township residents requested a water foundation, bench, and trash receptacle to be installed at the Lincoln Street Water Tower location.

Public Services Director Chappell notes that this project is complete.
Absentee Voting
For the May 2nd Special Election, you will notice changes on the absent voter application due to Proposal 2022-2 that was passed in November 2022.

  • For this election (and all future elections), there will be prepaid postage to send your application back in the mail.
  • If you prefer to drop off your application, our (black) drop box is in the foyer of the Township’s administrative office located at 13300 168th Avenue. The first set of double doors is open 24/7.
  • If you are currently on the Permanent Application List, you will continue to receive an application (prior to each election) to complete before receiving your absentee ballot.
  • If you check the box (on the sticker) on your application, you will now be on the Permanent Ballot List and will automatically be sent a ballot for future elections without having to complete an application (for each election), for as long as you remain at your current residence.

If you have questions, please call the Clerk’s staff at 616-604-6314 or 616-604-6343.
Residential Developments
Ottawa County continues to be the fastest-growing county in the State, which has created a significant shortage of residential dwellings units. HousingNext – an organization serving West Michigan – reports the need for 17,278 new “for-sale” homes in Kent and Ottawa County and 14,618 new rentals units by 2025.

As of April, developers are looking to construct several new developments in Grand Haven Charter Township – with a total of 809 potential new residential units. Further, it is anticipated that many of the existing residential subdivisions will continue to expand over the next few years.
