Seattle Social & Committee Showcase on Dec. 5

Patrick Lindblom

Seattle Chapter

The Seattle Chapter of SEAW is planning a Winter Social and Committee Showcase for December.

The Winter Social will be an opportunity to get together and socialize in a relaxed and inviting environment prior to the end of year holiday rush. The Committee Showcase aspect is to display the fantastic work that our state-wide committees are involved with. We will take some time for the committees to highlight their accomplishments and describe their ongoing work.

Being involved in a committee provides the opportunity to become an expert in a particular field of design (Wind, Seismic, Snow), engage with the wider community (Education, Outreach, Scholarship, Public Information), assist with disaster relief (Disaster Prep & Response), or champion changes within our industry that you are passionate about (Sustainable Design, SE3, Legislative).

Look for more details in the coming weeks, and mark Thursday December 5th on your calendars!

Seattle & Southwest October Dinner Meeting Recap

Patrick Lindblom

Seattle Chapter

Last month, the Seattle and Southwest SEAW chapters held a joint meeting, hosted by DeWalt. We got together in South Seattle and had the opportunity to socialize, have a bite, and drill into concrete! DeWalt brought their full line of concrete anchorage equipment and provided a hands-on fasteners training. Everyone was provided the opportunity to learn and hone their skills at installing under-cut, screw, and epoxy concrete anchors.

Lars Anderson from DeWalt provided the NCSEA approved training, which included considerations about anchor selection, inspection issues, installation preparation and dust remediation. These are incredibly valuable insights that all engineers can benefit from.

This was a great opportunity for the two chapters to get together, socialize, and learn some important skills.

2025 Membership Dues Update

SEAW Board

Dear SEAW Members,

As discussed in previous Equilibrium articles, SEAW membership dues will be increasing effective January 1, 2025. The updated membership dues are listed below for each chapter and membership type. These adjustments help SEAW continue providing you with valuable resources and support while keeping pace with rising costs.

Here is a recap of the reasons for the dues increase:

  • NCSEA Dues Increase: As an SEAW member, you automatically receive membership benefits from NCSEA. The NCSEA Board approved a dues increase starting in 2023, which will continue incrementally through 2027. This adjustment helps cover the increased NCSEA dues while keeping our membership strong on both state and national levels.
  • Rising Costs of Programs and Services: SEAW has not adjusted its dues since 2014, despite the growing costs associated with offering our programs and services. We remain committed to delivering high-quality events and seeking cost-effective solutions, including virtual offerings, alternative venues, and sponsorships to keep expenses down.

We understand that dues increases can be challenging, and we’re grateful for your support and commitment. Your involvement and dedication enable SEAW to strengthen our community and ensure we continue to have a meaningful impact in our field.

Please don’t hesitate to reach out if you have any questions.

Seattle Chapter Board Updates

Owen Kohashi

Seattle Chapter

Regretfully, Juliette Peyroux resigned from the Seattle Chapter Board of Directors, and we thank Juliette for her two years of service on the board. As stipulated by our bylaws, the board appointed a replacement to fill the remaining year of her term. We would like to welcome Jerry Lee to the board and look forward to his contributions and participation!

Jerry Lee, P.E., S.E., is a Senior Design Engineer and Associate at CKC Structural Engineers in Bellevue. He moved from Los Angeles to Seattle where he soon joined SEAW and was active in the YMG. He has served as a structural engineer mentor in the ACE Mentor Program several times. Jerry pursued structural engineering to work on high-rise projects and had the privilege to be a key participant in multiple performance-based design seismic projects on the West Coast. His experience is primarily with commercial projects, such as multi-family and mixed-use buildings utilizing post-tensioned and reinforced concrete. Jerry's background is rounded out with unique large-scale civil projects, such as the Panama Canal Expansion.

Welcome Jerry!

SEAOC Convention/SEAW Pathways Cohort Experience

Haylie Tallon

Pathways

I had the opportunity to attend the joint SEAOC convention and Northwest Conference in September as a part of the 2024 Pathways program through SEAOC. The Pathways program started in 2022 and was a response to the 2020 Call to action from NCSEA and SEAOC. Pathways aims to support and develop programming for students and early career professionals with an emphasis on those from historically underrepresented groups.

Because the SEAOC Convention was in Portland this year, SEAOC Pathways opened the application to those in the Pacific Northwest cohorts of SEA. Upon learning that, one of my mentors encouraged me to apply because they thought that it would be beneficial to my career. I ultimately applied and was accepted to the program, and I had a great time in Portland. This year’s cohort consisted of a diverse group of 28 early career professionals and 21 students.

The conference provided a specific track with multiple sessions focused on providing support to those participating in Pathways. The sessions focused on strategies to combat burnout, how to advocate for yourself and your peers, and navigating the transition between college and the workplace.

The 2024 Pathways Cohort gathered at the SEAOC/SEA NW Conference in Portland.

Friday’s session was a two-hour panel with experienced professionals who shared their experiences, the choices they’ve made to get to where they are, and the different challenges they’ve faced during their time in the industry. The program also assigned “partners” to each cohort member, providing a mentor professional to talk to throughout the convention. We were encouraged to build relationships with our partners and with each other.

When there was not a Pathways session, I attended technical sessions and spent time networking with professionals outside of Pathways. Over the three days, I learned a lot, I made a large number of connections, and I had a good time meeting new people and learning more about structural engineering.

I am very grateful for the support that SEAW provided that made it possible for me to attend the convention, and I hope that SEAW continues to support the Pathways program as they see fit. I am proud to be part of an industry committed to taking the extra steps to provide the support to be more accessible for those in underrepresented groups.
