From the Founder

The last month has been an exciting one for Dorcas Destiny International through the efforts of our Kenya-on-the-ground team providing weekly academic support to Victory School through our Educational Enrichment Program! Our Sharon Maruti and her team have done an amazing job with both encouraging our little ones and giving them tangible assistance in the classroom.

Their work has been enhanced by the re-launch of Education Crosswalk, our weekly remote teacher professional development program! I kicked it off with a session titled "Casting a Prophetic Vision for the Future" that reminded the teachers that the people they call students and pupils are also God's children.

One of the subjects that I'm personally most passionate about as it relates to teaching and learning is that each human being on the planet was designed with certain gifts, talents, and skills that allow each of us to be a "GENIUS" in our God-given area of giftedness! Isn't that both a profound and simple thought? We should all strive to be the very best version of ourselves; there's no failure in that.

The flip side of that conversation is that adults raise children in their own image, meaning that if a parent or a teacher or anyone interacting with children and young people have a skewed image of themselves, they will also have an incorrect vision and perspective of the children they are guardians and stewards over. That absolutely should NOT be!

We must remember that our time here on earth should be intentional and purposeful, speaking and sharing life with others and also with ourselves. Let us strive to have a healthy and balanced self-image so that we will not damage others with whom we interact, whether other adults or children.

Raise the Roof for Victory School!

Our Victory School children in the Baba Dogo slum of Nairobi are in desperate need of a school building. Currently, the children are in less-than-ideal conditions, and though they share their smiles, we want to see them thrive in a more healthy and hygienic environment. There are around 75 students stuffed into only three classrooms. As you can imagine this is not an ideal environment. Additionally, Victory is at the mercy of the landlords who displace them several times a year. It is overdue for this to stop!

We want to purchase a building that will not only have multiple classrooms, but also living quarters for our orphans, house parents, and families.

Toward that end, local supporters are invited to a fundraiser we're hosting on the south side of Chicago on Saturday, June 10, 2023. Watch your mailbox and social media for an invitation and announcement!

The fundraiser will include entertainment (spoken word, open mic), an art show, and a silent auction! The registration fee is $30.

We invite you to take part in the fundraisers to help create, support, and encourage progress at school and better living conditions for the less fortunate children, women, and communities in Kenya (and later beyond). You can start saving now for your donation!

Motivated by Love King’s Academy is a school located in Opoya village, Migori County, Kenya, East Africa. Children are partial or total orphans, from families of peasant farmers. Grade levels include Baby Class, Pre-Unit, Nursery, and USA Grades 1-8. The children come to school willing to learn however they often come hungry, with broken shoes, unkempt uniforms or clothing, etc. Your monthly donation of $30.00 will support a child in Opoya or Baba Dogo slum (Victory School, Nairobi) through food, clothes, and payment of their school fees.
