Getting Involved on Campus:

An Important Aspect of the College Journey

Getting involved can help students make friends and find a community on campus. The office of Student Engagement and Activities creates opportunities for students to engage, learn and connect by providing platforms, programs, spaces, and support systems that connect them to each other, and the wider campus community. They cultivate a community ethos where each student is and feels valued in all of their identities and experiences that make them unique members of our community.

There are countless ways to get involved! We have more than 350 student recognized organizations that provide transformational experiences to our students. Studies show involved students have higher GPAs. In 21-22, our executive board members in recognized student organizations reported an average cumulative GPA of 3.5.

One way your student can tune into campus life is by visiting the SB Engaged website, stonybrook.edu/sbengaged along with its companion, the CORQ app (available in iOS and Android), which connects students with opportunities, events, and organizations on campus. If it’s happening on campus and of interest to students, it’s on SB Engaged! Students can also use the theme, category, and perks filters on the left side of SB Engaged to search for specific types of events.

Tips from Students - How Your Student Can Get Involved on Campus

Sprinkling Support: Salt Shaker Parenting

Our metaphor of being a Salt Shaker parent means sprinkling your student with support, questions, and love in a gentle, subtle way.

As parents, watching our children mature as university students can be an exciting and proud time for us. We see their intellectual capacity expand and are thrilled to hear them discussing material related to their areas of study.  In addition to academic responsibilities, there are many opportunities for growth at Stony Brook University and we hope you will gently support your student with ideas for experiential learning, outside the classroom setting.

While family members may worry that extracurricular activities can take students away from the academic rigor that is required to be a successful student, these opportunities are high-impact activities that will develop other skills and knowledge that contribute to a well-rounded education. Research, internships, club membership and campus jobs all teach students aspects of leadership and build skills for their work ethic skills that will certainly serve them well when they graduate!

Take a few minutes to ask your student if they are involved outside the classroom with any clubs or research. Let them know that you support them in embarking on these additional educational paths and meeting new people on campus. If your student is unaware of where to begin, suggest they reach out to the Career Center, their academic department or the CORQ app. Remember, these connections can provide mentorship, build confidence and reinforce time management skills!

Getting Involved in Volunteer Work and Community Service

Giving back to the community is not the only benefit to participating in community service. Students participating in both on and off campus community engagement activities also gain:

  • leadership, teamwork and, career-related experience,
  • access to networking opportunities, and
  • meaningful experiences to add to their resume

There are many ways to get involved in community service. Students can visit the Center for Service Learning and Community Service to learn more. The Center is also hosting a Volunteer Fair on March 29.
