Wellness in Our Democracy series resumes this semester
The University of Kansas collaborative series presenting discussions on misinformation, disinformation and the wellness of democracy continues this semester. The first event, a webinar at 7 p.m. Jan. 25, examines the importance of local journalism to thwart misinformation efforts. The event features Patricia Weems Gaston, Lacy C. Haynes Professor of Journalism; J-School alumna Mackenzie Clark, founder of The Lawrence Times; Mike Semel, local editor of The Washington Post; and Reggie Hubbard, founder and chief serving officer of Active Peace Yoga. J-School open house
The J-School welcomed students back to campus last week with an open house and info fair on Tuesday. The day kicked off with Doughnuts with the Dean, followed by student media organizations and clubs tabling and providing information about how to get involved. Student Services offered drop-in advising appointments and wrapped up the event with a presentation about the new Sports Media and Society concentration and a KU basketball watch party.

Applications to become a Report for America Corps Member close Jan. 30. Report for America has 300 reporters and photographers in over 200 newsrooms serving communities across the United States. RFA helps local newsrooms report on under-covered issues and communities by helping them find emerging or experienced journalists and paying half their salary. Corps members are talented, service-oriented journalists who provide residents with the information they need to improve their communities and hold powerful institutions accountable. Apply here.
The KMUW Korva Coleman Diversity in Journalism Internship is designed to train college students of color to be part of the next generation of public radio reporters and newscasters. The intern will get an immersive, hands-on learning experience at KMUW, Wichita’s award-winning National Public Radio station, as well as mentoring from NPR newscaster Korva Coleman. The full-time internship is for 10 weeks beginning about May 30. The intern will receive a $5,000 stipend and free room and board. Deadline to submit is Jan. 27. Learn more here.
The Elizabeth Miller Watkins Scholarship assists women students of outstanding scholastic achievement and demonstrated financial need in completing their college education at KU. Awards of up to $2,000 per semester will be made to each recipient. Applications are now being accepted through Feb. 15. Learn more and apply here.
PRSSA will have its first meeting of the semester at 6 p.m. Feb. 8 in Stauffer-Flint Hall, Room 303.

Peer educators back at Stauffer-Flint
HOPE@CAPS Mental Health Peer Educators are a team of currently enrolled KU students who are certified and trained in providing support, education and resources to their peers who may be experiencing distress that might not rise to the level of need for mental health intervention at Counseling and Psychological Services. The J-School is on the peer listening schedule on Wednesdays from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. in the lobby of Stauffer-Flint Hall for students who would like to drop in. Learn more here.

Assistant Professor Judy Watts had two submissions accepted at the 73rd annual International Communication Association conference. The manuscript "Wise Beyond Their Years: Testing the Mediated Wisdom Framework with Young Children" was accepted with colleagues from The Ohio State University in the children and adolescent media division. Additionally, the extended abstract "Testimonials Eliciting Affect: Overcoming Anxiety and Low Self-Efficacy as Resistance to End-of-Life Conversations" was accepted in the information systems division.
Anyone with a KU email address can now access The New York Times online and The New York Times app for free. Site access was expanded through negotiations by KU Libraries and made possible through funding from KU Student Senate. Read the KU News story.

The Career and Outreach Office will share tips on how students can prepare for the March 2 career fair from 1 to 2 p.m. Feb. 22 in the Clarkson Gallery.
MB Piland, a marketing agency in Topeka, Kansas, is hosting a one-day job shadow experience for juniors and seniors on Thursday, March 16, at its office, 923 S. Kansas Ave., Loft Suite 7. The onsite experience includes a sample marketing strategy meeting, hands-on creative exploration and critique, brainstorming exercises, lunch, interview and portfolio tips, and social media do’s and don’ts.
