Tinker Field Research Highlight: Hugo Salgado
|
Hugo Salgado, a PhD student in the Department of Spanish and Portuguese, recently conducted field research in his native El Salvador, supported in part by a 2020 Tinker Foundation Field Research Grant awarded by CLAS.
Hugo is a linguist specializing in the highly endangered indigenous language Nawat. His dissertation project is entitled "New Voices for Ancestral Words: The Acquisition of Nawat Pronunciation by Speakers of Salvadoran Spanish."
Hugo's fieldwork entailed recording native Nawat speakers in western El Salvador as well as Spanish-dominant Nawat learners in the capital, in order to identify aspects of Nawat pronunciation that are most difficult to acquire. Especially given the central importance of orality in Nawat culture, Hugo hopes that this research will aid in Nawat revitalization initiatives by informing pedagogical materials and practices.
Please join us in congratulating Hugo on his excellent work and wishing him luck with his continued research.
