STEM(M) AT ST. LUKE'S: COOKING WITH CHEMISTRY

Our Chemistry and Culinary Medicine students joined forces in a Fluffy Pancake Challenge to celebrate National Chemistry Week. The concept of Cooking with Chemistry provides a fascinating exploration of the science behind the food we prepare. First students reviewed the structure and purpose of gluten. They learned that chemical reactions and principles are crucial in transforming raw ingredients into our dishes. When it comes to whipping up a batch of fluffy pancakes, it helps to understand Maillard reactions and the chemical process that occurs as proteins and sugars in the pancake batter react at high temperatures. After a lesson on the interplay of chemical components, temperature control, and reaction kinetics, our student chefs formed teams and competed to see who could apply the principles they learned and create the tallest pancake. Beginning with a base ingredient of all purpose flour, students could choose from an array of additional ingredients. Some teams chose to use baking powder while others used cream of tartar. Some worked with buttermilk, while others experimented with 2% milk and vinegar. In addition to these options, students could use butter, oil, baking soda, salt, sugar, and eggs. They were allowed to bring in their own additional ingredients that did not include leavening agents. The results were varied. The winning pancake measured almost an inch in height! Thankfully for that team, taste was not a consideration.

The challenge illustrated that there is art AND science behind the food we cook and eat.

WE'RE FUELING STUDENTS' PASSION FOR DISCOVERY

Mrs. Lersch’s middle school Flight and Space students & future aerospace engineers designed, prototyped and tested aircraft models to learn about the science of flight.

Limited to the provided supplies, each team of students utilized higher-order thinking and problem-solving skills while following the engineering design process. They were encouraged to experiment with different airplane designs, test their creations in a controlled environment, document their results, and continue to refine the models to improve their performance based on the desired outcome.

Each plane had to complete a flight by attempting to land on a precise target located 3 meters away without flipping or rolling over.

ST. LUKE'S ROBOTICS TEAM WINS BIG!

Our Robotics Team placed first in the robot competition, competing against 16 teams in Pensacola. They now advance to the championship in Florence, Alabama, where they compete against 44 other teams on December 1st. Way to go, Wildcats! We know you all have worked VERY hard for this!

AZALEA TRAIL MAID 2024-2025 NAMED

Congratulations to Melanie Davis for being selected to represent St. Luke's as an Azalea Trail Maid for 2024-2025! Stay tuned to find out the color of her dress!

2nD GRADE LEARNS TO FARM

Middleton Farms has been a family-owned, working dairy farm since 1948. Our students had a fantastic time learning about the farm's processes for planting, harvesting, and growing crops to feed the dairy cows. In addition, they also got to witness a live cow-milking demonstration and even had the chance to bottle-feed baby calves! The students also enjoyed taking a hayride around the farm seeing the newest addition of baby goats. As a bonus, they planted sunflower seeds and made fresh butter! Overall, it was an exciting and educational experience.

ST. LUKE'S XC IS STATE BOUND!

The XC Team recently competed at sectionals where the boys placed 1st and the girls placed 2nd. Garrett Dolbear placed 1st, Jake Davis placed 5th and Rishi Gupta placed 7th for the boys. Sadie Oberkirch placed 4th and Ella Downing placed 7th for the girls! Way to go, Wildcats! Safe travels and fast runs at State!

CENTER STAGE STANDS OUT AT DISTRICT TRAUMBAUER!

Center Stage stood out at the District 5 Trumbauer Competition at Murphy High School! All of the students worked so hard to prepare their pieces amid Fall Play and Homecoming season and we couldn't be more proud!

MIDDLE SCHOOL PLAY: THE NOT SO MYSTERIOUS DISAPPEARANCE OF CINDERELLA

Our middle school theater class was amazing as they performed The Not So Mysterious Disappearance of Cinderella. This hilarious new version of Cinderella offers up a much more contemporary twist to the old tale. This time, Cinderella goes missing and everyone in the kingdom is a suspect. Packed with humor, fresh takes on classic characters, and plenty of pop-culture references, this play was surely entertaining!
