1st Opportunity for Public Comment- New Charter Application Updates

Public Comment Sought on Drafted Changes to the Application for a New Charter

The proposed changes to the Board’s Application for a New Charter have been drafted to bring the application up to date with current educational trends; to better represent the Board’s expectations, as outlined in its adopted frameworks; and to better align with how schools develop. The changes are based in lessons learned in recent new charter application cycles, learning staff has engaged in on a national level, and feedback from recent cohorts of Technical Review Panel Members.

These changes are primarily substantive in nature, but additional technical changes have been made to better clarify criteria and expectations, make submission of certain information more streamlined for applicants, and create more consistency between documentation being reviewed across application packages. All proposed changes will also be made to the Application for a New Charter with an Online Instruction Component (AOI Application).

Prior to the Board’s consideration of these draft changes, Board staff is soliciting stakeholder feedback and public comment.

The draft Application for a New Charter document includes a tracked changes copy of the proposed changes, and a clean copy of the proposed application. It should be noted that changes are still required for formatting consistency, and forms and templates may undergo additional technical changes to maintain consistency with the proposed changes to the application, the Online System, and other documentation.

The window for the first opportunity for public comment will be open January 10, 2025 – January 29, 2025.

All stakeholder feedback submitted by January 29, 2025 using this Google Form will be considered by the Board at an upcoming meeting. Members of the public will have an additional opportunity to provide comments to the Board at the meeting.

The Board and Board staff would greatly appreciate your feedback. If you have any questions, please contact Rachel Hannah at Rachel.Hannah@asbcs.az.gov

ASBCS Financial Update

ASBCS Online has been updated to allow charter representatives to monitor the Board’s receipt and review of the annual audits conducted by independent CPAs. The “Audit Status” option is available to charter representatives through the “More” menu (right side of screen after logging in and selecting the charter holder name). The “Audit Status” landing page includes FY2023 and subsequent audits and identifies the stage of the Board’s audit-related processes the audit is currently in. Status definitions are available on the landing page. The charter representative may view additional information by clicking on the “Audit Number” for a specific fiscal year.
