Aidan Burns Internship Spotlight

Aidan Burns, a 2017 Real Estate major is interning this summer at Partners Group USA in Manhattan. "PG" is a publicly traded Swiss company with over $50 billion in assets under management. The goal is to realize potential in private markets by financing and developing companies, and investing in private equity, private real estate, private debt and private infrastructure on behalf of our clients.

Working with the real estate team, Aidan gains valuable experience in helping research and underwrite prospective real estate investments ranging from multifamily development projects, industrial space portfolios, and office buildings. Aidan has also understood where to find the value in a presented investment opportunity, and learned fundamental Excel skills that are used in calculating metrics such as IRR, cap rate, and equity multiple. Overall, the internship has been great real-world business experience and an excellent opportunity to gain insight into the commercial real estate industry.

Nelson Jayakar - Internship Spotlight

Nelson Jayakar, a 2017 Finance major is an intern with Workforce Partners, a real estate investment firm that specializes in Fairfield County, CT. Workforce Partners both invests in, and purchases commercial properties, apartment complexes, and hotels that can produce favorable returns.

As an Acquisitions analyst, Nelson works identifying undervalued properties using a number of valuation methods including discounted cash flow analysis. He collects, manages, and compares market research data in the differing neighborhoods that make up cities. The properties pursued range from multi-family homes and senior affordable housing, to high rise apartments and boutique hotels. Nelson works with a team that identifies both risk and expected returns to see if a property will bring value to their portfolio, using both debt and equity investments.

Vesta Summer - Internship Spotlight

Betsy DiPaulo (RE '17), Bradley Morrison (RE '17), and Kelly Yates (RE '18) have been interning in the Acquisitions & Development department at Vesta Corporation in Weatogue, CT. Vesta develops, manages, and owns high-quality affordable housing across the country. At present, Vesta owns and/or operates 39 affordable housing communities, including nearly 6,700 apartment homes in Connecticut, New Jersey, Ohio, Texas, and the District of Columbia.

Betsy, Brad, and Kelly have gained invaluable first-hand experience working with the Vesta team. Their responsibilities include underwriting deals, performing market research and due diligence, and preparing applications for a variety of affordable housing programs. Betsy and Brad will continue to work at Vesta for the remainder of the summer, while Kelly will be studying at the University of Salamanca in Spain.

Internship/Job Placement

The Center for Real Estate and Urban Economic Studies has assembled resumes of internship candidates and graduating majors in Real Estate as well as other allied disciplines. Real estate students have or are in the process of completing what many consider to be one of the best academic real estate programs in the country. So far this year students have placed in full-time positions in companies such as Boston Capital, Cornerstone, Cushman & Wakfield, Factset, Fitch Ratings, Kroll Bond Ratings, Prudential, The Vortex Group, Toll Brothers, UBS, Vesta Corp and Wells Fargo. Some of our Internship placements consist of the following: CBRE, Cornerstone, DCP, FRQ Advisors, HIMCO, Kroll Bond Ratings, NE Private Client Group, Partners Group, Prudential Valuation, Ram Realty, UBS, United Bank and Vesta Corp.

2016 Calendar

September 15, 2016- New York City Field Trip: Students will travel to New York to visit several real estate firms, including CBRE, Cushman & Wakefield, JP. Morgan, Kroll Bond Ratings, Partners Group and YMCA Retirement Group. The day will conclude with a reception at the NY Kitano, 66 Park Avenue at 6 pm.

Students should watch for real estate society emails for details on these events. The Professional Speakers in Classroom events are currently being scheduled.
