Mary Jane Jennie Mason

Mary Jane Jennie Mason, Mrs. Joseph B. Mason - #12118

Mrs. Mary Jane “Jennie” Mason, pictured above, was the woman who organized the fundraising to buy the land for the Southwest Harbor Public Library in 1892. She was a correspondent for many newspapers under the pen name “Spray,” carrying on the legacy of women writers who supported the library started by Annie Sawyer Downs. She served on the first committee appointed to select and purchase books for the library. Her daughter, Maude Mason Trask, later served as a librarian for the Southwest Harbor Public Library. She helped raise the $100 needed to purchase the land for the library by organizing a dollar social. Many of the town’s women volunteered to raise a dollar in some unusual manner, and a poem was written to celebrate their efforts. Click here to read it.
