Facilities Needs Committee Discusses Programs For New High School

The San Benito High School District Facilities Needs Committee on Wednesday, March 22 held its fifth meeting of the year, focusing their discussion on how educational programs drive school facility decisions. The meeting featured a presentation on the educational programs offered at Hollister High School, as well as A to G and Career Technical Education graduation pathways along with a discussion of how preparing students to be college AND career ready is a priority. The discussion was led by Director of Academics and Instructional Programs, Elaine Klauer, as well as Coordinator of Career and College Readiness Claire Grissom. Attendees reflected on where most Hollister High School students go after high school (44 percent enroll in a community college), and the concept of work-based learning was discussed. Grissom noted that the focus is to "bring the classroom to industry and bring industry to the classroom." The committee and presenters discussed which educational programs might be offered at a second high school, including linked learning academies, college dual enrollment opportunities, and early college opportunities, all with an eye toward preparing students for success after high school. The Facilities Needs Committee is scheduled to meet again on April 12 to discuss facility components of a new high school and then will meet on April 26 to develop findings and recommendations that they will present to the San Benito High School District Board of Trustees on May 23.
