SOUTHWEST RECREATION UPDATES
SOUTHWEST BLOCK PARTY RECAP
The Southwest Block Party on Friday, April 14, was a success, with many visitors from our neighboring community in attendance. Non-residents were offered memberships at the resident price during the event. Nearly 50 new members joined, and facility tours were given throughout the evening. Surveys were completed with those at the event, to support ideas for future programming. The Bus Stop Band played at the event and had many dancing. A special thank you to the team members from Communications & Engagement, Police, Human Resources and Recreation, Parks & Arts that contributed to the planning and implementation of event.
PRESCHOOL PLAYGROUND RENOVATION
The preschoolers from the Southwest Recreation Complex had the opportunity to see their playground get renovated. They watched as new playground equipment was installed, including adding a new playhouse, slide, and Astro Turf. Once the playground renovation passed the licensing inspection, much fun was had playing and enjoying the new equipment.

This playground is open exclusively to our young learners at Southwest Preschool. Be sure to enjoy the public playground at Southwest near the athletic fields.
"MISSING MIDDLE HOUSING" CODE UPDATE PROJECT
Community Development is undertaking a significant overhaul of the Largo Comprehensive Development Code over the next 12-18 months to modernize its codes related to housing as we plan for current and future resident needs. Going forward, this initiative will be called "Housing for All -Expanding Largo's Housing Options." The project will include a housing needs analysis for projections over the next 10 years, evaluation of City codes as well as model codes from other jurisdictions, recommendations for code changes that can enable different types/scales of housing to serve different housing needs, and graphic depictions on model sites to explain the proposed changes visually.

The housing needs analysis is underway. Activities in May will include an initial site visit and city tour with Community Development Department team members and Partners for Economic Solutions, the consulting firm for this project, and three focus group sessions. The focus sessions include an inter-agency group to understand better the countywide and regional framework and innovative approaches being used in neighboring jurisdictions, a technical group of city staff members who navigate the current codes regularly to help identify major barriers and opportunities for improvement they come across, and a developer/financing focus group to get perspective from the housing development community on some of the barriers to building/preserving affordable housing as well as financing/market acceptance levels for different types of housing.

The next phase will involve a larger community input process expected to start toward the end of June. More information will be coming out on those activities soon.
