Dobyns Rods News & Updates
Stay up to date on all the latest and greatest from Dobyns Rods!
Gary's Corner...
We have some new things in the works!!!

I’m sure we’ve all heard of the supply chain issues. These are very true of course. Dobyns Rods is in pretty good shape considering where many companies are. We have a few holes in our lineups but not many and I’m working to plug these holes. We are making some changes as we’re adding combos, reels, a new series of rods, lots of new hats, a lighter weight hoodie, a very nice light jacket, and a heavy jacket as well. We’ll also have some other accessories as well. Things that we’ve gotten requests for over the years.

The combos are something that we’ve had a lot of dealer requests for and finally decided to make them. These are not cheap combos as I couldn’t build a cheaper reel worth a darn. Retail will be $189.99.

Dobyns is finally going to bring a few reels to market. There’ll be three colors as guys like to match reels and rod colors. The reels will be accented with red, blue, and green colors. They’ll be available in three gear ratios for casting reels and they’re a 100-size reel. They’re available in both left- and right-hand models. They have 11 ball bearings and a roller bearing. They have a super smooth drag system with upgraded drag washers. They’re very smooth and cast super easy. The spinning reels will be available in the same three colors and in sizes 2000 and 2500. The Maverick Reels are overbuilt as most of our products are. They’ll retail at $99.99. I had to make reels for the combos but I kept upgrading them so I’d personally tournament fish with them. The rods and reels can be purchased separately or together for a better price point.

The new series of rods is also called Maverick Series. These are all graphite construction rods built along the lines of all Dobyns Rods. They’ll not have a foregrip so you can touch the blank as you palm your reel, they’re very well balanced, and sensitive. There are a bunch of models in casting and spinning with all of our popular lengths. There are lots of 7’ and 7’3” models with flipping and crankbait rods included. They’ll retail at $99.99.

All fishermen love hats and we’re adding a bunch. I get accused of “being an old man and set in my ways” by my office gals. So, when you guys see these funky colors, blame my gals. The cool colors with camo and such are my additions!!!

We’re finally going to offer a lighter weight 100% polyester hoodie. Our Super Heavyweight hoodie will still be in the lineup, too. This will give anglers more choices.

We will be offering a very conformable light jacket. Many of you guys have dealt with Chelsie over the years. This was her pick and she wears it all the time, even in the summer here at the office. I’m not sure if she loves it that much or if she’s just cold blooded . The heavy jacket is my pick. If I’m going to wear a jacket it’s going to be cold. It’s a jacket I wear fishing and hunting in the winter. It’s still comfortable and you can move in it plus it’ll last forever. Well, maybe not forever but I have one with the same material and build that’s over 20 years old and has many years left in it. So, there’s Chelsie’s lighter pick and my heavy jacket pick, but both are great jackets. We’re going to try and make a fun video where Chelsie talks about her pick and I talk about mine so you guys can get an idea on these jackets. If we pull this off it’ll be a miracle but probably worth a laugh.

These are some of the things we’re looking at for 2022. We’ll have stock on most of these things sometime in December. We’ll keep you posted.

Thanks to all!!!
Rods & Rigs - Fall Finesse For Western Bass
By Gary Dobyns for The Inside Line

I love it when I start to feel that cooling in the air, because I know fall is arriving and the fishing’s gonna pick up. The fall season is my favorite time to throw topwaters, especially on western fisheries, because I know I can count on good quality and numbers of fish. However, I’m also going to have a good assortment of plastics handy to make sure I can capitalize on the seasonal feeding.

Every lake is different, but one of the things I find consistent is that, while you can definitely catch good fish on top, a lot of times most of your better quality fish are deep. I actually won a November tournament on Lake Oroville and every one of my fish came out of 55 feet of water.

This and many other experiences have taught me that finesse is definitely a factor in the fall. What I throw varies by lake, but here are some of my most dependable presentations.

Insane! 12lb Bass, Boat Flipped
While we don't recommend boat flippin' a 12lb fish, we can't deny, it's a pretty sweet catch!

Rand “Bass Man” Taunton has put his Dobyns Rods' to the test on several occasions without fail. This 12lb fish was caught using the Dobyns Champion XP Series DC 805FLIP/PUNCH.

Good luck Austin and Luke!

Digino Takes 7th on Pickwick
Dobyns Rods Pro Chris DiGino used his DC 736CB GLASS and the DX 744C to take 7th Place at the MLF Toyota Series on Pickwick Lake. Fishing grass above the Natchez Trace Bridge, Chris threw a ½-ounce Z-Man ChatterBait Jack Hammer with a Lake Fork Live Magic Shad and a ¼-ounce homemade swim jig with a Keitech Swing Impact FAT trailer for his first Top 10.

Congratulations Chris!
Rod Spotlight - DC 736C
DC 736C - This model is the Champion XP Series DC 763C and it was made with a special purpose in mind. Diamond Valley Reservoir is in SoCal and it has very clear water with lots of fishing pressure. Many tournaments were won there by dragging a Carolina rig with 6-pound test lines. This was really a big deal and the anglers insisted 6-pound test was a must. We got tons of requests to make a lighter tipped 7’6” rod so guys wouldn’t break fish off when using the lighter line. This rod became very popular in that region but quickly started getting traction for lots of other baits and techniques as well. The rod is a Med/Hvy fast action blank that’s very balanced and sensitive. I’ll admit this rod is on the lighter side of Med/Hvy but very popular. There are lots of anglers that prefer lighter power rods. I’ve gotten many reports of guys using it for jig fishing, spinnerbaits, and even crankbaits. I’ve used it a bunch with light baits myself. It’s a rod that’s not talked about a lot but gets used by many anglers.

Dobyns Rods Pro Staffer Of The Month
Kyle Smith, Elizabethton, TN

I've been a proud Dobyns Staffer since 2010. 11 years ago I was wandering around ICAST and came across the Dobyns booth, There was a giant guy in the booth with a donut and I was really hungry so I stopped in. I grabbed a donut in one hand and a Dobyns Rod in the other and I immediately forgot about the donut. Since then I have built an arsenal of Dobyns rods and have somewhat of an addiction to them. Every model I own has a purpose but they are all so versatile that several models are utilized for multiple purposes. The Dobyns team is amazing and make you feel like a family every time you call the shop. There really is no comparison to being a part of the Dobyns family.

Although South Holston Reservoir and Watauga Lake would be my "home" waters, I spend more time on Cherokee and Douglas Lakes than any others. There are several fisheries I'd like to visit but if I had to choose one, I'd say it would be the upper Mississippi River for a frog fishing trip. Growing up in South Carolina and fishing Santee Cooper I didn't know how to fish water deeper than 6 feet. When I moved to TN I had to learn how to fish again, only having bodies of water close by that were deep and clear which has allowed me to become a little more versatile.

In 2016 I began pouring some plastic baits for myself and a few of my buddies. I co-designed a bait that we sold for about a year called the "drop shad", and had some great success. In 2019 V&M acquired the bait and has renamed it the vertical shad. This year, it was used to win the Bass Open on Smith lake in Alabama. I guess that would have to be my biggest accomplishment within the fishing industry.

My most memorable fish would not necessarily be the biggest one I've landed but last year while fishing a tournament I was skipping docks and skipped in a boat slip. The bait went over chain to a boat lift and back under the slip. As I started the bait out I felt a thump and set the hook. I could tell immediately it was a quality fish and I was in a bad situation so I leaned into her. The fish surfaced, jumped the chain on the boat lift, and swam straight out of the boat slip. She jumped right at the boat and I boat flipped her. She weighed 5.34 and gave me enough to take the win. When it's meant to happen, there's nothing you can do to stop it.

My Go-To technique would have to be skipping something around cover. I love the close quarter battles with a big fish and a stout rod. My weakness as an angler would definitely be dragging something out deep. Even though I've become fairly proficient with electronics, when fishing deep I want to be reeling something instead of dragging something around.  I couldn't live without my Champion XP 734c. I call that rod my Rambo rod because it can do anything. I've got a couple and they seem to always be on my deck, with either a topwater or spinnerbait tied on. I need to utilize my DX742SF more, particularly in the late summer when fishing is tough. I'm sure using slow moving smaller baits would improve my cast to catch ratio.

When I'm not fishing I'm spending time with my wife Desiree and my two boys, hunting, watching my boys play ball or playing and singing music.

*Kyle recently won Angler of the Year in the Volunteer Division of MLF's Big 5.
Emmanuel College Recaps Incredible Season
FRANKLIN SPRINGS, GA - The bass fishing team recently wrapped up their 2021 season. Our Lions had an incredible year, making showings on the national stage in only the third year of the program. Let's take a look at some of their outstanding accomplishments.

The anglers predominately compete across two circuits, Major League College Fishing and the Carhartt Bassmaster College Fishing Series. In the Major League College Fishing series, Emmanuel ended up in third place for the year in the Southeastern conference. In the School of the Year Standings, the Lions finished second in the nation out of 178 programs listed. What an incredible performance by our anglers!

Virgillito Takes Top Spots In Recent Tournaments
Congratulations to Dobyns Rods Pro Staffer Bradley Virgillito for taking home the win at The Boat Shop Crappie tournament using his Colt Series CL 601SF. He also took 2nd Place at a Lake Fork Tournament using his Champion Extreme HP Series DX 743SF throwing a 3/16 oz. dropshot with a Roboworm and the Champion XP Series DC 765FLIP with a 1/2 oz. Candy Craw Jig, flipping standard timber in 18-25 feet of water.

Congratulations Bradley!
Rod Spotlight - DC 764C
DC 764C - This rod is the Champion XP Series DC 764C. It’s 7’6” 4-power or rated Heavy fast action. I believe it’s one of our best Carolina rig rods, but it’s a super versatile rod. It has a great following with it being many anglers’ single favorite model. I love this rod myself. Some of my favorite baits on it are spinnerbaits, lighter buzzbaits, various small swimbaits with 1/4 to 1/2oz heads, under spins, Scrounger heads, and more. This rod is one of the most versatile rods in our lineup. The DC 734C gets a lot of talk and is super popular, but the 764C does everything the DC 734C does but is a little bit faster in action. This is the very first model that we ever ran out of so many years ago. It proved to be more popular than I thought it would be. If you like longer rods, the DC 764C might become a favorite of yours.

Welton & Franceschi Take 3rd At Don Pedro
Fall is in the air as Dobyns Pro Staffers Nick Welton and Tony Franceschi begin to wrap up their seasons with championship qualifications.
On October 2nd & 3rd, they competed in the Wild West Bass Trail Team Championship on Lake Don Pedro. This foothill Reservoir is notorious for being tough during the fall transition, and tough it was.
Fishing against 74 other qualifying teams, they endured the tough bite and were able to locate fish schooling on bait down to 45 feet. Utilizing the Champion XP, Champion Extreme and Xtasy spinning rods, they used a 1st-Gen Jaw Dropper with a Keitech Easy Shiner and Missile Baits Quiver Worm along with dropshotting 4 1/2 inch worms to catch a total of 22.51 pounds, ending the event in 3rd Place. Just 1.74 pounds behind the winners. Their equipment performed flawlessly with no lost fish. A credit to superior rod design.
Nick's season ends while Tony’s continues. Look for him November 5th-7th as he wraps up his season on the California Delta with the Wild West Bass Trail Pro/Am Championship.

Congratulations Nick & Tony!
