LED Lighting for Battery Production Facilities

Due to soaring demand for lithium-ion batteries to meet the needs of electric vehicle and energy storage solutions, construction of new battery plants is booming.

Production is estimated to increase somewhere between 7 and 15 times by 2030! Many areas in these new facilities require specialty lighting solutions for hazardous locations, extreme temperatures and corrosive environments.

Lithium-ion battery production overview:

1. A unique slurry is mixed from raw materials and then coated onto metal foil and dried to create the battery electrodes. During this process, flammable solvents are used and recovered.

2. Next, the “calendering” process compacts the electrodes using rollers followed by the “slitting” process which cuts the electrodes to the desired dimensions. Vacuum drying is used to remove any residual moisture.

3. Cells are assembled by placing the electrodes into a housing and filling it with an electrolyte. During this process, flammable vapors are created.

4. Cells then undergo the “formation” process that creates a protective layer of lithium ions on the anode during initial charging/discharging followed by “aging” where the cells are stored to allowing time for the protective layer to stabilize and for cell “degassing.”

5. The final steps include testing under various environmental conditions including temperature extremes and grading the finished batteries based on performance. These steps can include areas with rapidly changing temperature ranges from -40°C to +85°C (-40°F to 185°F)
