Announcing the 2023 Activation Fund Grants

As reported by the Worcester Business Journal, MassNonprofit News, and The Chronicle of Philanthropy, The Health Foundation of Central Massachusetts recently awarded 10 grants totaling $1,063,451 through its Activation Fund program, which provides capacity-building support for organizations working to address community-identified health issues.

The 10 recipients represent a diverse mix of organizations located throughout the region, five of which are receiving Activation Fund grants for the first time.

The Health Foundation's Board Chair Judge Timothy M. Bibaud said, “The Activation Fund and related community outreach efforts are the primary vehicles through which the Board and staff receive information about community needs and barriers to accessing health-related programs and services. The Health Foundation is honored to partner with these ten organizations striving to fill critical gaps and support historically marginalized populations in our community.

Two of this year's recipients, Abby's House and the Worcester Housing Authority, recently held events related to their projects which you can read about below.

Worcester Housing Authority Opens Facility Designed for Unhoused and Low-Income Residents

As reported by the Worcester Telegram & Gazette, the Worcester Housing Authority recently opened the "A Place to Live" housing facility that will provide permanent housing for 24 members of Worcester's chronically homeless population as well as wraparound services to help them improve their lives. The Health Foundation provided funding for furniture, appliances and supplies for the facility.

"This building is so much more than a roof, walls and windows. I know that simply providing an apartment without services doesn’t solve the underlying issues. We will provide those services and help our new residents find permanent housing here at 38 Lewis Street. For some it’s A PLACE of REBIRTH, for others its A PLACE TO GROW but for all, it’s A PLACE TO LIVE." - Alex Corrales, CEO, Worcester Housing Authority.

Artist Housing Project Breaks Ground in Fitchburg

Two vacant schools and a former horse stable will be transformed into housing for artists in Fitchburg. ICON Architecture has created the rendering of the project. (photo courtesy of Fitchburg Art Museum)

In 2014, Making Opportunity County (MOC) was awarded a Synergy Initiative grant from The Health Foundation for an innovative and collaborative approach to transform the North of Main neighborhood of Fitchburg, an area plagued by poverty and vacant buildings, into a vibrant community where people want to live, work and invest. The area was re-envisioned as a “Gateway to Arts and Culture.”

The result was the ReImagine North of Main project. Joining many other funders including the Federal Reserve Bank of Boston, the City of Fitchburg, and state government, The Health Foundation provided over $2 million for the project from 2015-2020. The project focused on three key areas: Neighborhood Development to increase the quality of neighborhood life; Economic Development to increase the number of viable main street businesses; and Community Engagement.

Part of the project was the transformation of the vacant B.F. Brown building into artist housing. The official groundbreaking for the artist housing took place on November 2 as reported by WBUR. The project will provide 68 units of affordable housing for artists and include studio, gallery, rehearsal and performance spaces.

The Health Foundation is excited to see this next phase of the project get underway.

Free Provider Training for Opioid Use Disorder Treatment

On December 14, UMass Memorial Health will host a free one-day event aimed at advancing prescriber education and opioid use disorder (OUD) treatment in primary care settings throughout Central Massachusetts. This 8-hour educational session will offer training for physicians, physician assistants, and nurse practitioners regardless of their clinical affiliation. The course will also allow prescribers to meet current educational requirements while providing guidance in diagnosing and treating OUD in their patient populations.

The first training will be held on December 14 from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Beechwood Hotel, 363 Plantation Street, Worcester and will also be offered via Zoom. Subsequent sessions will be held in other parts of the region to facilitate participation from more rural parts of the region. In addition, Project ECHO modules will provide another opportunity for providers to present and learn from clinically-based vignettes regarding OUD and overdose prevention.
