Five Things to Know about Germán Alcaraz

I was born in Río Cuarto, Córdoba, Argentina, a city located in the middle of the country. I graduated in 2019 from the Teaching Training Program at National University from Rio Cuarto. I also graduated in June 2023 from the Masters degree in Team Leadership and Team Management. I made the specialization in Coaching and Neuro-Linguistic Programming. I am about to graduate at the end of this month from an MBA program.

In my free time I love reading, traveling, getting to new places and meeting new people. I really enjoy being surrounded by people who challenge my views and opinions because I believe that they help me personally grow and enrich my worldviews.

I have an older brother and three nephews (including a God-son), who I really love and love being around them. I have a great liking for children (from babies to young adolescents) because I love how spontaneous and funny they are! This is related to my position in the school where I worked in Argentina, being the principal of Kindergarten and Primary School.

As for animals and pets, I find cats the most attractive, interesting and wonderful animals in the world. Now that I am living here in the U.S., my second favorite animal is squirrels!!!

At DDCC I am currently teaching Spanish, as it is my first language. It may be quite a challenge to reflect on one's own language and then having to teach it using a second language, in this case English. It is being a wonderful and enriching experience and I am learning a lot not only about English and also Spanish!!

Five Things to Know

  1. Travel: The best place where I've been to is Santa Marta, in Colombia. This is a wonderful, very natural place. The beach is amazing and, as it is quite far away from cities, the sky at nighttime is breathtaking, as well as the warm, blue, clean water.
  2. Music: I generally listen to indie/folk music. I find it really calming and entertaining.
  3. Food: I love eating homemade food like pasta or pizza. I also like fast food sometimes.
  4. Movie/Streaming Show: I am watching Far Away, in Netflix :)
  5. Joyful Experience: Travelling and friends and family!

Study Abroad in Ireland

Students at the fairy bridge

By Aaron Prillaman

This fall break, John Rosenberger and I had the privilege of taking 16 outstanding students to the magical Emerald Isle, no not that one, I’m talking about the beautiful country of Ireland. Our students spent the first 8-weeks of the fall semester studying Irish culture and then had the wonderful opportunity to be immersed in it for nine days.

Aaronmore Island

When asking the students what they thought about the trip, they stated that Ireland has an unmatched natural beauty, that the people there are very friendly and nice, and that they love our in-country guide, Dr. Niamh (pronounced Neeve) Hamill.

Davidson-Davie has been taking students to study in Ireland for many years, and the Institute of Study Abroad Ireland offers a wonderful opportunity for students to experience the similarities and differences between the two cultures and for them to learn to connect to people through those similarities and differences.

This cultural competency is an important skill in the workplace. While this trip is similar to those we have done in the past, Dr. Hamill has created some new experiences for our students. Probably the top two favorites when polling the students were Leo’s Tavern and Arranmore Island. Leo’s Tavern is the Donegal home of the famous singer Enya, and Arranmore Island is a great place to experience stunning cliffs by the sea. I can’t recommend this trip enough, and I hope that everyone will consider both taking this trip and recommending it to your students for the fall of 2024.
