VOLUNTEER SPOTLIGHT - Judy Tilmont

Newton Trails' newest board member

Judy Tilmont and her husband came to Covington five months ago. Prior to moving, she was Executive Director for the U.S. Tennis Association Central Indiana. Her district covered 61 counties and included 9000 members with over 2500 adult and 1500 junior players.

She is most proud of her efforts to "expose tennis to everybody equally, not just the people who can afford to go to a club." Those efforts paid off as she led initiatives that increased adult membership by 1200 and junior participation by 800.

When asked what caused her to volunteer with Newton Trails and agree to serve on the Board of Directors, she replied "The trails is one of the things that helped sell us on the area. Our family has historically been very outdoors oriented and likes hiking and running. Having trails in the area was attractive and led us to locate here where we have access to the trails."

For her, the best part of volunteering with Newton Trails "is working with a group of people whose dedication to the end result is clear. They are not in it for personal gain. They are not in it for recognition. They are in it because they see the benefits of the trail and the good it does for the community."

Besides volunteering with Newton Trails, Judy is currently exploring local employment and volunteer opportunities other than for Newton Trails.

Finally, she offered this for Newton Trails supporters, "Thank you very much, you are giving your time and money to a very good cause that is beneficial to the community and will continue to be so for quite sometime. To everybody who is not enjoying the trails, please get out there. It is a great way to get around, get some exercise, and if you have time, consider volunteering."

TRAIL NEWS AND UPDATES

Safety first - Always remember to stop and look both ways before crossing any street or road. Drivers cannot always see you and sometimes do not stop for people in crosswalks.

Alcovy River Bridge - Newton Trails has half of the estimated $700,000 needed to reconstruct and open the Bridge. About one-third came from donations, one-third from a grant, and one-third from Newton County. We thank all those supporters.

Newton Trails is has pending requests for the remainder and will have its annual fundraiser in hopes of garnering the rest of the funds needed to complete this "shovel-ready" project.

New amenities - Hoyt Baker donated a bench in memory of his wife Beuna. That's him sitting on the bench which is located on the Cricket Frog Trail south of Conyers Street, Covington.

John and Kelli Nipper donated a bench to honor their friends Johnny and Vicki Roquemore. It is located west of Sewell Road in Mansfield and offers an outstanding view.

Jay Bailey has donated a bench. It will appear where the Satsuki bench is now located on the Cricket Frog Trail south of Conyers Street in Covington. The Satsuki bench is moving to a lovely site just west of the Clarks Grove neighborhood.

Additional benches and trash cans are in the works. Watch Newton Trails Facebook posts for announcements.

National Celebrate Trails Day, April 22, 2023 - This is is an annual spring celebration of America’s trails started by the Rails-to-Trails Conservancy in 2013. Its purpose is to encourage people across the country to get outside and enjoy trails. Go for it!

Expanded parking - The parking area at Old Starrsville Road has been expanded. Green steel posts with white tops have been driven in along the edge of the Cricket Frog Trail right-of-way, please stay within that area.

Cricket Frog Trail Shirts - Don't forget that you can purchase a shirt in the color and style of your choice as well as other items bearing the Cricket Frog Trail logo at Rush Tees and Signs on the Covington Square. Every item purchased results in a $5 donation to Newton Trails.

AmazonSmile - Amazon is discontinuing its charitable giving program through AmazonSmile. But, many thanks to those people who made Newton Trails their beneficiary.

Kroger Rewards - This program is still going strong. If you have not done so, please sign up and make Newton Trails your charity of choice. Sign up instructions at https://www.newtontrails.org/givingback.
