The LHS Grizzliettes visit the magic kingdom

The Good Stuff by Shelley Bennett

by Shelley Bennett

Welcome to Mrs. Bennett’s weekly column, I will be your substitute columnist today while Mrs. Bennett returns from competition in Anaheim – Jeremy

This week’s edition of Good Stuff is all about the Lassen High Grizzliette Drill Team, a group of history making girls who, according to their coach, “learned, perfected and competed” with three routines in three divisions, placing fourth in the open Small Military category.

There were more than 2,200 dancers who took part in the 36th Annual USA Dance Nationals held in Anaheim, and to compete at that level the Grizzliettes have had to train hard all year long.

“While we didn’t bring home any awards, our scores were overall higher than our last competition in Cupertino. We placed 4th in Open Small Military, missing a trophy by a few points.”

“Overall, it was amazing and it gives us some feedback and how we can improve and come back next year.”

Despite the long trip to southern California, and a visit to two theme parks, the team managed to retain enough energy to compete in three divisions at the Nationals: Open Medium Lyrical, Open Small Military and Open Large Hip Hop.

The team was escorted to the sunny end of California by ten parents who Shelley said were, “very helpful!”

It wasn’t all work for the Grizzliettes, who also got to visit Knott’s Berry Farm and Disneyland.

Coach Bennett said the team had a blast and remarked that, “There is nothing like walking into Disneyland with 20 teenagers!”

“I got to see Star Wars Land for the first time! It was the best. It is so detailed, down to the Coca Cola cart and impeccable bathroom. I am sad that I didn’t run into any droids.”

Lassen County Chamber Gears Up for 15th Annual Spring Home Garden Recreation Show

The Lassen County Chamber of Commerce is getting ready for one of Susanville’s sure signs of spring – the annual Home, Garden and Recreation Show to be held April 29th at the Lassen County Fairgrounds. The day-long event features fun for do-it-yourselfers, gardeners, lovers of the great outdoors and even a wedding showcase!

The Chamber still has room for those home, garden or outdoor recreation businesses who have something interesting or unique to offer visitors to the show. The remaining booth space is limited and registration is on a first come, first served basis.

The Home, Garden and Recreation Show, held each year at the end of April, is designed to help generate sales revenue for participating businesses, gain exposure for local services and products and attract visitors and tourists to the community. With an average attendance of 1,500 people this event is an inexpensive way to advertise your business and showcase your product or service.

Would your business like to take part in the fun?

The cost to participate, for chamber members, is $50 for a (10′ x 10′) booth space. Non-members pay $75.

One table and two chairs will be supplied for the event, and the set-up will begin on Friday, April 28th from 12:00 to 4:00p.m.

If you are interested in being a part of the big soiree you can click here to download a vendor application.

For more information call the Lassen County Chamber of Commerce at 1.530.257.4323 or visit the chamber’s website at www.lassencountychamber.org.

Rush Work on New Railroad

Susanville Soon to Have Direct Communication With Sister Communities

March 21, 1913

That this district soon will be served by the Southern Pacific is evidenced by the activity of railroad officials in this city in the last few days.

Recently A. W. Bowman, superintendent of the Utah Construction company, H. H. Riddels, a contractor for the railroad were here.

They were followed by H. Barroes, T. M. Bedolph and Fred Callahan, all Southern Pacific officials, who were making a tour of inspection of the route of the new road.

St. Patrick’s day was celebrated in immediate railroad circles by the crossing of the Western Pacific track is coming this way at the rate of three miles per day, so it can be readily be seen that Susanville will be on the railroad map in a very short time.

In spite of unforeseen difficulties, the construction crew is within a few days of its best guess and the croakers who said that the railroad would never get to Susanville have begun to modify their song and take comfort in predicting long and tedious delay.

At the present time over 60 miles or railroad has been constructed, out of a total of 106 miles.

The stretch from Amedee to Susanville is 36.8 miles, or practically 27 miles, but it presents more difficulties than the run into Amedee. However, these are not great enough to delay the arrival of the road to any great extent.

L.R. Wattis and W. A. Porter of the Utah Construction company were here yesterday and reported that two seam shovels are being shipped to Susanville and that they will be used on work up the Susan River canyon.

They stated that the shovels should be on the ground within a few days and will be placed at work immediately. It was also stated that a telegram had been received from headquarters in San Francisco to accept the lowest bid for the advance work and that the contractors will immediately get to work.
