January 2025

Happy New Year, everyone — and welcome to the latest edition of our monthly newsletter, Mission Matters!

We have an incredible year ahead of us and one of the busiest mission schedules we've had in a long time... The Philippines in February, San Lucas in April, adding Kenya in April, Antigua in July, Health for the Littles in July and Uganda in September. This will be a great year for you to change the lives of so many!

We have so many dedicated volunteers here at Medical Missions Foundation, their commitment to the people we serve is overwhelming.

Each month, we want to focus on a volunteer that has continued to make an impact in bringing "Health for the World."

This month's Volunteer Spotlight is well-known in the Medical Missions Foundation community and has been with us for many years...Cora Zamora.

How did you first learn about Medical Missions Foundation?

In 1995, Drs. Tony and Luz Racela officially organized the Medical Missions Foundation. Doctors, nurses and friends met at their basement to talk about ways to give back to the Philippines in regards to providing medical care to those who need it the most. I was one of the nurses who was lucky to get a chance of helping organize the foundation. Our first medical mission was in the Philippines in 1996.Because of the outstanding level of commitment shown by our donors, friends and volunteers, Medical Missions Foundation expanded and found creative ways to deliver health care to the needy people around the world.

What missions have you been involed with?

I have been involved on several missions: Guatemala, Mali Africa, Romania, Dominican Republic,Vietnam and Cambodia. I have been volunteering for the Philippines mission trip since its inception.

What are the most memorable experiences you've had?

My extensive involvement in medical missions has provided me with a wealth of knowledge and experience. One of my most rewarding experiences happened in my hometown medical mission. During my routine rounds of our fresh post op thyroidectomy patients, I encountered one patient who was gargling, in severe respiratory distress.

I called out for oxygen and grabbed a surgeon. The surgeon opened the incision by taking out the sutures using his fingers, blood came out from the incision site. She was rushed to the OR, did an emergency tracheostomy. She was discharged in the hospital after 2 days. She wrote a letter thanking us for saving her life.

Why do you volunteer?

I volunteer because there is a global need for healthcare especially for surgery that could not be done without the mission. It is rewarding for me to see the smiles of gratitude from our patients whose lives we have changed. We give them a ray of hope that there are people in this world who cares.

What advice would you give someone considering joining a mission?

Be open and ready to adopt to whatever circumstances that happen that day. You may not have the supplies, equipment, and staff so you need to be resourceful. Have a heart to serve. Learn to respect the boundaries that is set for your safety and others by your coordinators.

Any last thoughts or comments you want to add?

I encourage volunteers to join in on a medical mission and share our God given talents and blessings to those who need the most.

Volunteering with Medical Missions Foundation can be a rewarding and life-changing experience. No matter if you have medical experience or not, we'd love to have you join us.
